Chloe Goadby wins Scottish student women's title by 8 strokes at Lossiemouth

Chloe Goadby, a native of St Andrews but a student at Stirling University, yesterday won the Scottish students women's golf championship by eight strokes at Lossiemouth. 

Chloe had scores of 76, 75, 67 and 76 for a total of two-over par 294 over the Moray Golf Club Old and New Courses. 

Runner-up was Lorna McClymont (SRC) with scores of 82, 70, 69 and 81 for an aggregate of 303. 

One-time leader Penny Brown (Stirling) finishes third on 303, two shots ahead of Jasmine Mackintosh. 

Stirling 1, with a total of 300, won the women's team event by 14 shots from SRUC 1.

FRIENDLY MATCH BETWEEN FIFE AND RENFREWSHIRE

A friendly match of 8 players a side between Renfrewshire and Fife Counties took place yesterday where Fife Captain Lorna Bennett had very kindly arranged the match at Ladybank GC. 

 The course was in very good condition for this time of year, and despite the howling wind, the sun shone and there was no rain. 

The top game saw Fife's Elaine Moffat and Susan Jackson narrowly beat Renfrewshire's  Megan Briggs and Carol Whyte on the 17th  and Renfrewshire won the other 3 games.

RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY CELEBRATE 110 YEARS AT THEIR ANNIVERSARY DINNER

60 Renfrewshire County Ladies, and some guests, had a memorable Dinner on Thursday evening at Haggs Castle G.C., and were treated to a ‘Welcome’ drink of Prosecco to celebrate their 110th Anniversary.
However we were sorry to hear of Past Captain Pamela Mackenzie’s accident in preparing for the event, and we wish her a speedy recovery.  
Haggs Castle G.C. was the perfect venue, with a lovely meal and excellent service. 

The meal was preceded by a wonderful toast from Centenary Past Captain Christeen Finlayson 

She said " It gives me great pleasure to stand here to propose a Toast to the Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association In its 110th Year. It seems like no time since we were at the Glynhill hotel, celebrating our Centenary!"

"It is very encouraging to see 63 ladies here tonight and 17 Out of 22 Renfrewshire golf clubs are represented. Our Association has been guided, and our standards kept high over the past ten years by captains Trish Brown, Maureen Woodhead, Gillian McGinlay, Gillian Kyle and our 110th Captain, June Lockhart. "

"It goes without saying, they have been ably assisted by the long-serving Honorary Life President, Wendy Cameron, and Honorary Past presidents Eileen Gibb and Jennifer Mack along with many committee Members who have given generously of their time and knowledge."

"With great enthusiasm, I did look through the all the Minutes of the past ten years, but you will be happy to Know - if not estatic! -  that as so much has happened I will only mention a very few highlights - for example ---- We were the Scottish County Champions in 2010 and 2017, Megan Briggs was the Scottish Ladies Champion in 2009, followed by Alyson McKechin in 2013, and, of course, Eilidh Briggs played in the Curtis Cup in St. Louis, America, in 2014." 
  

"I must congratulate all our talented and dedicated players who have kept Renfrewshire’s name in the fore- front of ladies amateur golf, and I have no doubt that by the time our annual general meeting comes around on the 5th of November, there will be additional feats to be added to their success. This also applies to the future of our junior golf members who will carry the baton on into our 120th celebration".

She finally wished the Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association continued warm friendship and every success for the future and she asked the Ladies,  to be upstanding and join her in a toast to our association - affectionately known as the R.L.C.G.A.

This was then followed by a Grace from President Pearl Orr. The second half of the evening saw Julie Wilson receive some Bombay Gin on account of sitting on the ‘lucky seat’, and then came our very entertaining speech from the inimitable Karen Maxwell, Past Captain of D & A. Part of her speech certainly put a new slant on the ‘Cycle of Life’!! 

The musical part of the evening began with a visit from  Parisienne Fifi Lemonde ( aka Moira Kerr) then some more entertainment from the songstress to complete an excellent evening. 

 Vice Captain Sandra Littlejohn ended the evening with a Vote of Thanks, where special mention was made of our 2 Carols – Carol McNally for her efforts in making the Hall appear extra special and welcoming, and Carol Fell for her skills in allowing us to sign up online, the make up of the table menu cards and taking photographs and videos throughout. Clare-Marie Macaulay believes Solheim Cup can be a real game changer

Back in ye olden times, recreational opportunities for the bairns were pretty limited. If you weren’t wiping soot off your face after 12 hours in a chimney then you were running up and down a cobbled street like something out of a Hovis advert.

These days, of course, there are more distractions than you can shake a stick at. And yes, there are probably even classes in stick shoogling. Getting the young ‘uns into sticks of a golfing kind has been Clare-Marie Macaulay’s all-consuming passion for a few years now and her sterling work with the juniors at Paisley Golf Club continues to bear fruit.

In this age of swipe-and-scroll gadgetry, prising a younger generation away from the instant gratification of their handheld thingymebobs almost requires the hydraulic jaws of life.

“That’s the tough thing, but all I can do is make it as much fun as possible,” said Macaulay of an enthusiastic approach which has certainly breathed new life into Paisley’s junior scene. “I’ve been here for about six years and there was nothing much in place when I started. The lack of juniors was an eye-opener.

“I remember my first morning class, we had four turning up. But we started it anyway and they came for four weeks. We got it up to eight and then eight in each class and it grew from there and we started our Junior Academy. The junior membership at the club is now maybe 60 to 70.”

Getting the children hooked early into a game that can be enjoyed – and often endured – for the rest of their lives is the key for Macaulay who works alongside her brother, Paisley club pro Andy Carlton, in this family affair.

“We trialled a session for three and four-year-olds and ended up getting over 30 turning up,” she added of her Golf Tots programme. “I was quite taken aback. We opened a performance studio up which allows us to coach in the winter. They have all the trackman technology and the virtual courses. They love it. I’m not sure what they’ll think when we actually go outside, mind you.”

With its ageing demographic and declining membership figures, it’s easy to find downbeat statistics about golf in the game’s cradle that can be about as uplifting as reading a court summons.

There is plenty of good work being done at clubs throughout the country, though, and Macaulay prefers to adopt a more optimistic outlook.

“People who are non-golfers tend to see it as not very cool,” she said. “But we have been in schools round Paisley just to give kids the chance. You ask them at the end of a lesson ‘is that better than you expected?’ The response is usually ‘yes’.

“I talk to the girls who come to us and say my best pals are my golf pals.

If you get to play in events as you develop, then you’ll be with your friends all the time and they’ll grow to become lifelong friends. That’s the great thing about golf.

“It’s maybe too late for some clubs but I am a bit more optimistic about the future than I was. There are more initiatives, there are more female PGA pros going about too. People are trying. We need to be more positive.”

With the Solheim Cup coming to Glen­eagles later this year, Macaulay, who also helps run a Junior Golf Tour which has grown to incorporate 23 events, is hoping the women’s transatlantic team showpiece between Europe and the USA can act as a springboard for participation.

“I don’t think we can underplay the importance of the Solheim Cup,” she declared.

“We need to get as many juniors to that as possible. I remember the last time it was in Scotland, I was maybe 11 or 12, and I thought it was amazing.

“Youngsters will go to that and realise that golf is not old and boring. These are fashionable young girls who are great at their sport. The Solheim Cup is a huge opportunity for us.”

Ten girls braved the elements at Troon Fullarton yesterday morning to contest the Ayrshire Junior Spring Salver. 
Four pre-handicappers played 7 holes and in the 18 hole competition for the salver there were some great scores with the winner, on the better inward half, being Katy Hill (Turnberry) playing off a handicap of 10 with a nett 61 

First silver was Freya Russell (Royal Troon)  nett 62 
First bronze was Louise Milligan (Irvine GC) nett 61 
Second bronze was Katie Ronnie (Kilmarnock Barassie) nett 69

The Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association winter foursomes final was played at a breezy West Kilbride today

The final was between Audrey Thomson and Liz Keohone (Loudoun Gowf) and Marion Hamilton and Liz Fitzpatrick (Kilmarnock Barassie) 

It was a very close game all the way with the 12th being the turning point in the game and into the wind all the way home. 

Liz and Minnie capitalised on their shots and sealed the win on the 16th 3&2

Top-five finishes for Michele Thomson and Carly Booth in South

Plucky last-day performances earned top-five finishes for Scottish pair Michele Thomson and Carly Booth in the Investec South African Women’s Open in Cape Town.

As Indian rookie Diksha Dagar pipped home player Lee-Anne Pace for the title at Westlake Golf Club, Thomson finished joint-third, with Booth a shot behind in a share of fifth position.

It was Thomson’s best effort on the Ladies European Tour since the 31-year-old Aberdonian finished second in the Hero Women’s Indian Open in 2017.

She opened the final round with seven straight pars before producing a burst of four birdies in six holes around the turn to close within two of overnight leader Pace.

Thomson then parred the last five holes as she signed off with a bogey-free effort, finishing two shots behind Dagar who overtook Pace thanks to a closing 69.

Booth, who started the day alongside Thomson on one-over, matched Dagar’s effort, covering the last six holes in three-under to maintain her recent good run of form.

The 26-year-old, a two-time LET winner, finished fourth in the Canberra Classic a fortnight ago then claimed a share of 12th along with Thomson in last week’s New South Wales Open.

A closing 70 earned Kelsey Macdonald a top-20 finish as she tied for 18th on four-over, three shots ahead of Kylie Henry, who ended up on three-over following the same final-day score.

Stirling students Penny and Jordan wire-to-wire winners at Western Gailes

The 14^th West of Scotland Trophy students' golf tournament came to a close on Friday with two wire-to-wire winners in Stirling’s Penny Brown and Jordan Sundborg.

Once again Western Gailes was beset by atrocious conditions, the final day proving possibly even windier than the first two. This brought to a close the perfect storm of weather throughout the competition and in which every player’s performance was to be commended.

Brown (pictured right) started the day with a six'-shot lead over team-mate Hazel MacGarvie and extended that lead with a par at the first. However, a double bogey 6 at the 4^th, coupled with MacGarvie’s birdie at the sixth cut the gap to four strokes 

That would prove to be as close as Hazel got as back-to-back bogeys saw both players turn in 41. Two birdies on the back nine from Penny closed the door on the competition and only a double bogey on 18 prevented her from being the only player to shoot in the 70s each day, a back nine of 39 seeing her sign for an 80. Her final score of 235 gave her an eight-shot winning margin.

Former champion Lee-Anne Pace took control of the Investec South African Women’s Open today (Friday) and opened up a two-shot lead on the chasing pack at Westlake Golf Club.

The nine-time Ladies European Tour winner mixed five birdies with a solitary bogey for a four-under-par 68 and she will start the final round in familiar territory, having previously lifted the SA Open title in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

STRATHMORE GIRLS MAKE HISTORY

Testament to how far our girls have progressed. Strathmore Gents were struggling to field a Scratch League team and Gents Captain Norman Dyce suggested to the Perth and Kinross Executive that if Strathmore were to include Ladies or Girls then they could field a team. 

Being one of the most forward thinking Counties in Scotland this was agreed and as Junior Convenor I am personally delighted as I was instrumental in having Girls included in the Junior Scratch League 11 years ago and this year will field the first ever all Girl Junior Scratch League team and will have 2 in the Gents Team and 3 in the Ladies Team. 

This is unprecedented and probably does more to enhance the amalgamation currently going on within Golf. 

We have also recently started running Family Competitions within our Junior Section so that parents and grandparents can join in and these are gaining in popularity so if you want to grow golf make it inclusive. Strathmore and P&K are leaders not followers.

Scotland’s next generation of male and female golfers are set to benefit from a new partnership announced today between Scottish Golf and the leading US Golf Scholarship Consultancy, ProDreamUSA.

As Scottish Golf’s official recommended partner for junior golfers considering a golf scholarship in America, ProDreamUSA will support the National Governing Body in providing a pathway for Scottish golfers by working with them to explore opportunities which will allow them to pursue their aspirations in golf, as well as securing a University degree that will set them up for life.

Scottish Golf recognises that playing golf in the USA provides a terrific platform for young golfers to play full-time while earning a recognised degree or college qualification and today’s announcement comes at an exciting time for both Scottish Golf and ProDreamUSA with the top ranked Scottish Woman (Connie Jaffrey), and the top 5 Scottish Men ranked on WAGR either currently playing or having played at College in the USA.

Scots star Carly Booth to become Scottish Golf Ambassador for Women and Girls’ golf

Carly Booth is set to support Scottish Golf’s plans to grow the game among women and girls in the Home of Golf after it was announced on International Women’s Day that the former Scottish Girls’ Champion will partner the national governing body as an ambassador for women and girls’ golf.

A two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, Booth has enjoyed success both at amateur and professional level and is looking forward to playing an active role in supporting Scottish Golf to deliver on its vision of making golf Scotland’s 

Carly will work with Scottish Golf in her new ambassadorial role to raise the profile of women and girls’ golf through a number of exciting initiatives in 2019.

Dr Katrina Douglas Golf Psychology Workshop at Cowglen Golf Club

Cowglen Golf Club held a Golf Psychology Women and  Golf Workshop today set up by Cowglen's  Sue Fordyce. 

Captain Moir Kerr welcomed Katrina to the workshop and reminded us of the fact that Katrina won the British Ladies Amateur in 1982 and played in the 1982 Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team.
She then played professionally on the Ladies European Tour, where she won eight times and was a member of the 1992 European Solheim Cup team.


Katrina introduced herself and told us that that when  her father who was a very good footballer, stopped playing football he started playing golf. 

During her school holidays he lured her younger sister and her to the Normandy driving range in Renfrew and at  the range his friend, an international golfer himself (Cowglen's own Gordon Cosh) invited the girls hit some shots and gave them both their first lesson. 

 ‘It’s a shame Kitrina didn’t play when she was younger,’ he said to my father, ‘I think she could have been quite good.’  -- She was 17 at this time !

That comment set her father’s cogs turning and a few days later he put the following proposition to her: 
‘Would you like to leave school and play golf for a year? If you don’t like it you can return and complete your A-levels.

Katrina did leave school and she had a wonderful golfing career - reaching the top.

Once her competitive career was over, Katrina became a BBC Sport Online golf columnist and in 2004 she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Achievement psychology of international women golfers at the University of Bristol.

Kitrina is presently a Women and Golf magazine columnist 

The workshop was then held with great interaction with all who were present -- a break for lunch was provided by Cowglen GC  which was excellent 

We had discussions of all aspects of visualisation, feel, concentration, and attention to detail with the aim to make us feel more confident, focused and to be better prepared for the season ahead.
We even had to draw elephants at one point which was really difficult for many !!

Michele congratulates Megan MacLaren 

England’s Meghan MacLaren has won the Women’s New South Wales Open presented by Worrells for the second successive year after an impressive final round of two-under-par 69 for a three-stroke victory at Queanbeyan Golf Club. 

MacLaren was the only player in the field to shoot four rounds under par and finished on a total of 12-under-par, three ahead of New Zealand’s Munchin Keh and Swede Lynn Carlsson.

Carly Booth (69) and Michele Thomson (71) finished joint 12th on three-under, eight shots ahead of fellow Scot Kelsey Macdonald (75)

ELAINE MOFFAT FINISHES IN 5th PLACE IN SPAIN BEHIND 4 SPANIARDS

Spaniard Macarena Campomanes won  the Spanish Seniors Championship today at La Manga Club , Spain. 

The Madrid golfer started the final round with three shot advantage over Maria de orueta, and added her second title in this tournament.

Scot Elaine Moffat was the top Scot finishing at the near top of the leaderboard in 5th Place behind 4 Spaniards.

Frances Millar had an excellent last round of 77 to climb up the leaderboard to 23rd place out of 90 competitors

DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR SOLHEIM CUP

Yesterday was International Women's Day, and to mark it we recently spent a day with 2019 European Solheim Cup Captain Catriona Matthew and rising Scottish star Hannah Darling.

Two generations of Scottish golfers dedicated to their sport, honing their talent through hard work and commitment and inspiring others to play and enjoy this great game. It was just a glimpse of the incredible display of female sporting prowess that will be on show at Gleneagles later this year.

Ranfurly Castle pair triumph in Renfrewshire County Winter Foursomes Final Marathon

The Renfrewshire Ladies County Winter Foursomes was played today over Pollok Golf Course

Wow what a Final.  The course at Pollok Golf Club was in very good condition despite the testing elements, but all 4 finalists deserve medals. 

 It took 22 holes before the Ranfurly Castle pair of Anne Judge and Marion Munro eventually overcame Jan McNab (also Ranfurly Castle) and Sheila Shaw (Caldwell).  

However all agreed that shot of the day belonged to Jan, who played an excellent shot from a fairway bunker onto the green on the 5^th hole.

The number 6 was prominent in the first 18 holes – 6 shots given, 6 holes won by each pair and 6 holes halved ! How close was that. 

Thanks to Carol McNally for organising the venue and to Sandra Littlejohn for refereeing the extra holes.
