Louise Duncan is only 2 Shots off the top of the leaderboard at Carnoustie on Day 3 of the British AIG Championship at Carnoustie

The Women's Amateur Champion Louise Duncan (Ayrshire LGGA and West Kilbride) excelled once more today with a round of 68 in the 3rd round of the Women's AIG Championship at Carnoustie to finish on 7 under -- 2 shots behind the leaders

An ecstatic Louise Duncan revelled in the backing of the home crowd after her dream week at Carnoustie continued with another outstanding performance in round three.

The reigning Women’s Amateur Champion enhanced her chances of completing a remarkable double triumph by shooting a four-under 68 on Saturday.

At seven-under for the Championship, the 21-year-old trails leaders Anna Nordqvist and Nanna Koerstz Madsen by just two shots and will play in the third-last group in the final round.

“It’s not really sunk in, to be honest. I don’t really know what I’ve just done. I just really enjoyed it out there,” said Duncan after matching the opening-day score that thrust her into the limelight.

After surging into contention with the aid of five birdies, Duncan fired a stunning approach into the final hole and was afforded a rapturous reception as she crossed the Barry Burn.

“It was special. It doesn’t get much better than that, really,” she added.

“To come over that bridge, it was all very surreal and I loved every moment of it. It felt great, to have everyone supporting me and cheering me on like that is just phenomenal, and I couldn’t thank everyone enough

“My phone’s been going absolutely mental, along with my socials as well. It’s great to have all the support and have all of Scotland behind me.”

Another standout moment for Duncan came on the 15th, where she holed a lengthy birdie putt to the delight of the spectators gathered around the green.

“I’d missed a couple of relatively short ones the past two holes for birdies, so I felt like I was kind of due a long one,” she explained.

Duncan is firmly on course to claim the Smyth Salver after opening up a commanding lead over the two other amateurs to make the cut, Lauren Walsh and Annabell Fuller.

Yet an even bigger prize could yet come Duncan’s way on Sunday as she seeks to become the first amateur to win the AIG Women’s Open since Marta Figueras-Dotti at Royal Birkdale in 1982.

The youngster knows she will be nervous as she chases victory, but the events of the last three days provide her with increased belief.

“It gives me a bit of confidence, to know that I actually can go out there and play well on a big stage in front of quite a few folk,” she added.

“I wouldn’t say (I feel) pressure, but I’d definitely say nerves. I’ve spoken about it all week.

“They’re definitely there and they still are there. I don’t think they’ll go away tomorrow either. Just being able to handle it, taking a few deep breaths before every shot has really helped.”

LOUISE DUNCAN’S REMAINS IN CONTENTION AFTER ROUND 2

The dream continues for Scotland's Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) despite not quite matching the heights of her opening-day 68 but remains in contention entering the weekend after a 2nd round of 73 to finish  -3 after Day 2 at the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie.

Leading after the 2nd round on 7 under is  American Mina Harigue and Georgia Hall the 2018 Ricoh British Champion who Louise played with in both rounds.
Georgia said she can see something of herself in the 21-year-old Scot.

"I think she's a lot like me,” she said. “Quite quiet, just lets her golf do the talking.

“She's a very natural golfer. She just goes up and hits it which I think is a lot like me, too. She's an amazing talent and it was really nice to play with her.”

JENNIFER RANKINE IS THE 2021 RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPION

Jennifer Rankine 2021 - RLCGA Champion

Jan Macnab (Peggy Clark Trophy) Jennifer (RLCGA Champion)
and Morag Cunningham (Irvine Trophy Winner)

Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle)
and Julie Wilson (Williamwood) qualified for this year’s Championship Final, having beaten Alyson McGinnigle (Williamwood) and Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle) respectively in the semi-finals.

Julie started with a birdie at the first to go 1 up but Jennifer immediately hit back with an eagle at the second to square the match.  The remainder of the first nine was very close with some near perfect golf and the match was all square at the turn (both players were -3 and -2 respectively).

Jennifer won holes 10 and 11 to go 2 up and with the next six holes being halved with scratch golf, Jennifer went on to win 2 and 1.

Well done to both finalists for producing an excellent game and a big “thank you” to those who came out to spectate and support this year’s final.

Irvine Trophy(handicap Trophy)

“In calm conditions, local ladies Ranfurly Castle's Morag Cunningham and Vicky Rennie (off 32 and 33 respectively) played the match in a very sporting manner, and it most certainly was a match of two halves.

Vicky was 3 up at the turn, but Morag fought back to win the next three holes in a row.  Holes were fairly even after that until Morag won the 17th, to go 1 up, and held on to halve the 18th and win the match.

NB:  At the 15th, Morag’s tee shot hit the cliff and returned to the back of the tee!!!

West of Scotland's Louise Duncan has wonderful round on DAY 1 of the AIG Women's Open at Carnoustie

Amateur Louise Duncan (West Kilbride)
is playing in the AIG Women's Open over Carnoustie after qualifying by winning the 2021 British Women's Amateur Championship  in June

She had a 68 - 4 under par and played the 18th beautifully from tee to green and two-putted for a closing par. A day to remember for the young Scot, who is in pole position for the Smyth Salver and only one behind the leaders.

Other Scots playing are Kylie Walker, Kelsey MacDonald, Gemma Dryburgh and Catriona Matthew

From the AIG Website  -- AND LISTEN TO HER POST ROUND INTERVIEW

Louise Duncan was understandably elated after overcoming her nerves to shoot a fantastic 68 on day one of the AIG Women’s Open.

The Women’s Amateur Champion had acknowledged in the build-up to her major debut that she was feeling the pressure of competing on the biggest stage.

Yet Duncan looked totally at home on the famous Carnoustie links as she went round in four under to trail leaders Nelly Korda, Madelene Sagstrom and Sei Young Kim by just a single stroke.

“I played great,” said a smiling Duncan after her magnificent performance.

“I was happy to get it off the first and find the fairway … but I played steady all the way round, putted well and hit the ball really nice.

"It’s a bit surreal really, to be playing with the best players in the world and some really big names. It’s all a bit mad.

“I don’t really know how I managed to keep (my nerves) under control. I just tried to find the clubface really.”

The highlight of Duncan’s day came at the par-5 14th, where she followed back-to-back birdies by holing a 30-foot eagle putt to spark roars of delight from spectators.

“That was a great feeling. I wouldn’t have ever pictured that, to be fair, but it was brilliant, and to hear all the crowd, it’s a different experience to anything I’ve ever had,” added the 21-year-old Scot.

Her opening-day score matched the performance of illustrious playing partner and 2018 AIG Women’s Open Champion Georgia Hall, who provided a helping hand on Duncan’s big day.

“Playing with Georgia, she really settled me in there,” added Duncan. “She was lovely and chatted to me quite a bit. It definitely helped with the nerves.

“I think it was about the eighth hole when I started to calm down a wee bit, but it was great to play with Georgia. She was really lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Kelsey MacDonald is top Scot at Dumbarnie and secures AIG Women's Open spot

Kelsey MacDonald

Kelsey MacDonald had suffered hurt and disappointment in the past in her bid to play in the AIG Women’s Open for the first time, but her tears were joyous ones on this occasion.

Capping a brilliant effort on home soil, the 30-year-old from Nairn closed with a two-under 70 in the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open at Dumbarnie Links to finish with a seven-under 281 total.

That earned her a share of 15th spot in the £1.1 million event, and won the Jock MacVicar Leading Scot Trophy, created to honour legendary golf journalist Jock MacVicar who passed away earlier this year aged 83.

It was arguably the most impressive performance of MacDonald’s career, earning a bonus she richly deserved by securing one of five spots up for grabs in next week’s AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie.

MacDonald finished nine shots ahead of Michele Thomson after the first-round leader closed with a 69 for two-over, with Carly Booth, the third home player to make the cut, a shot further back after a 70.

GREENLEES STALWART WILLEEN MCCALLUM HAS DIED

Willeen McCallum

It is with great saddness that I have to announce the death of Willeen McCallum who ran the Greenlees league, single handed for 19 years. Her organisational skills, friendly manner and sense of humour stood her in good stead and we all owed her a great debt of gratitude.

In the her time all the Greenlees results were collated manually and then put in the Results Section of the Glasgow Herald

I don’t think anyone realised how much time and effort Willeen spent making sure that the league ran smoothly through the summers and then followed this up with the presentation lunches and December fixture meetings.

As well as the general day to day running of the league, proposals from clubs had to be dealt with as well as any complaints from clubs - on the whole the latter were not numerous."
"But it all added up to responsibility of running the league."

In her time of office the 50th anniversary took place and she organised a Greenlees Jamboree over Troon Portland. A highly successful day. 3 ball best ball competition with 60 competitors. Lunch provided for some 100 people. -- No mean feat of organisation

Willeen, Anne and Fiona
75th Anniversary Celebration at Cathcart Castle

She then attended the 75th Anniversary Match at Cathcart Castle in 2015  she is seen in the photo with her successor Fiona Roger and Secretary at the time of the 75th Anniversary Anne Dunn

On her retrial in 2008 she said that the highlight of her 20 years in office was the meeting of Mrs Greenlees in 1990 at the 50th Anniversary at Troon. Mrs Greenlees got married at aged 17, had 2 children by the age of 20 and started her golfing career at Prestwick St.Nicholas and died in 1994 aged 94

Willeen on the other hand started her golfing career at Ranfurly Castle and on her retiral she just managesd to squeeze in at no 9 in the Whitecraigs Greenlees Team..

Willeen was such a character and many of her antics came to the fore as you will see in the video below in 2007 at Prestwick St Nicholas at the Greenlees Presentation Lunch.

She also was a past member of Renfrewshire Ladies'  County Golf Assoiation and member of Whitecraigs GC   -- She will be sorely missed by many

SOUTH WIN THE VETERANS JAMBOREE AT GLENBERVIE

Team Scotland - Photo courtesy of Midland vets

This year Scotland hosted the annual Jamboree at Glenbervie GC near Falkirk for the Miller Stirling Trophy

The Jamboree is a prestigious 3 day event payed between the best "senior" lady golfers from England -- namely  North, Midlands, South and Scotland.

Those who went to watch were treated to seeing some fantastic golf being played on a lovely course but with extremely difficult greens.

Throughout the week the teams played 3 foursomes matches in the morning followed by 6 singles matches in the afternoon - so 9 points available each day. At the end of day 2 the teams from the North and the South were vying for top spot - both teams having won their matches against Scotland and the Midlands.

However, on countback of matches the South were up by half a point overall meaning in the final days match between the two leading teams, the North needed to win the match in order to secure the winners trophy.

Scotland lost to North, South and Midlands over the 3 days - - Unfortunately the Vets Jamboree and the Senior Home Internationals coincided  and Karen Ballantyne (Captain of the SVLGA) said "Very proud of SVLGA members Gillian Kyle, Elaine Moffat, Karen Marshall and Karen Ferguson-Snedden who couldn’t be at our Jamboree but performed so well at the Senior Home Internationals (Mixed).

Very well done to Captain Fiona de Vries.

A tense final day!

After the morning foursomes, the South led by 2 matches to 1, so the North then needed to secure wins in at least 4 of their 6 afternoon matches.

The end result came down to the last putt on the final green where the match was halved and resulted in the whole match being halved 4 1/2 to 4 1/2

The North missed out by the smallest of margins - they received the Tony Moffat Quaich as runners-up and the Miller Stirling Trophy this year went to the South.

SCOTLAND JUNIOR AND SENIOR HOME INTERNATIONAL COMBINED TEAMS NARROWLY MISS OUT TO ENGLAND TO CLAIM THE TITLES

In two very close matches Scotland’s combined teams pushed England all the way in the Home Internationals, as our Women finish on a high against Wales.

Final Results Junior Home Internationals

Scotland’s junior golfers
narrowly lost to England in a tense deciding match in the mixed Junior Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

The Scots needed to win the match to claim the trophy but came up tantalisingly short after losing a dramatic encounter 11-10.

Carmen Griffiths emerged with five points out of six with four wins and two halves to have the best girl performance

Final Results Seniors Home Internationals

Scotland’s mixed Senior squad
were also chasing outright victory on the final day at Woodhall Spa, but were narrowly edged out by their English rivals.

England secured the title with a narrow 6½ – 5½ win.

Karen Marshall  was Scotland’s top performer in the match with 4½ points out of 6.

Ireland beat Wales by 7½ – 4½ in the other match on the course to finish third overall.

Final Results - Women's Home Internationals

Scotland’s women’s team lost their opening matches to Ireland and England but bounced back in style by beating Wales 8½ -½ on the final day. That result was enough for the Scots to cement third place behind England and Ireland in the Women’s competition.

The leading Scottish points scorer was Curtis Cup hopeful Hannah Darling who won four and halved the other of the fives matches she played over the three-day competition.

DAY 3 OF THE HOME INTERNATIONALS

Going into the final day of the Home Internationals, the combined teams for the Boys & Girls and Senior Men & Women are both going head to head with the Auld Enemy for victory in their respective competitions.

DAY 2 REPORT FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE

DAY 3 HOME INTERNATIONAL RESULTS

Wednesday, 4 August 2021

Mixed Success on Day 1 of the Home Internationals

From the Scottish Golf Website

Scotland had mixed success on the opening day of the combined Home Internationals played over the Hotchkin and Bracken courses at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

The Scottish Junior and Senior teams both won the first of their round robin matches, but the Women’s team lost to Ireland and will now almost certainly have to beat defending champions England in the second round if they are to have any chance of repeating their most recent victory in the competition at Ballybunion in Northern Ireland in 2018.

This year due to Covid regulations both the boys and the girls, and the senior men and women, are playing together as one team and it proved to be a recipe for success for both combined squads.

Boys & Girls Day 1: Scotland 14.5 Wales 6.5

The combined Scottish boys’ and girls’ team raced into a commanding 5 ½ – 1 ½ lead over Wales at lunch after foursomes victories from Carmen Griffiths and Grace Crawford, Megan Docherty and Rachel Foster, Calum Scott and Gregor Graham , Daniel Bullen and Ross Laird and Cameron Adam and Connor Graham.

Ruben Lindsay and Scottish Boys Champion Archie Finnie halved their match, with the one loss registered when Robyn Fowlie and Katie Graham lost 5 & 4 to Darcey Harry and Gracie Mayo.

Fowlie quickly made amends for her earlier defeat when she beat Mayo 5 & 4 in the singles and further victories from Foster, Crawford, Lindsay, Scott, Adam, Laird and Connor Graham plus halves from Griffiths and Gregor Graham helped Scotland secure an impressive 14 ½ to 6 ½ win.

The Scots now play Ireland who lost 19-2 to England in the other first round contest.

Girls and Boys live scoring

Senior Men & Women Day 1: Scotland 7 Wales 5

The seniors match between Scotland and Wales was tied 2-2 after an evenly-balanced foursomes series in the morning.

The first two foursomes matches involving Karen Ferguson-Snedden and Gillian Kyle and Elaine Moffat and Karen Marshall were both halved.  Paul Moultrie and Stewart Henderson secured Scotland’s first full point with a 4 & 3 victory over Nick Grimmitt and Adrian Bragg before Philip Sutton and Andrew Williams evened things up by beating Ronnie Clark and Derek Paton by the same margin.

At that stage the match appeared to be too close to call. Wales briefly took the lead when Ferguson-Snedden and Moffat lost the first two singles but Scotland turned things round when Kyle, Marshall, Moultrie and Paton all won and Henderson and Clark halved their matches.

Scotland’s 7-5 victory means they will now play Ireland who lost 8-4 to England on the opening day.

Scottish Seniors Live Scoring

Women Day 1: Scotland 3.5 Ireland 5.5

The one disappointment on the opening day for Scotland came in the women’s match in which Scotland lost to Ireland after being level at lunch.

Hazel MacGarvie and Shannon McWilliam got the Scots off to the best possible start in the foursomes when they secured a 3 & 1 victory over Lauren Walsh and Sara Byrne. Chloe Goadby and Tara Mactaggart then halved their foursome against Aine Donegan and Anna Foster before Annabel Wilson and Beth Coulter evened things up with a one hole win over Hannah Darling (below) and Lorna McClymont.

It was all to play for in the singles and British champion Louise Duncan did put another point on the board for Scotland when she beat Foster 2 & 1 in the top singles, as did Curtis Cup hopeful Darling, but defeats for MacGarvie, McWilliam, Mactaggart and Goadby saw the contest end 5½ – 3½ in favour of the Irish.

Scotland now play England, who won all six singles while romping to an 8-1 victory over Wales.
