The Briggs Sisters do well at the 2nd Round of the Scottish Girls

Nairn Dunbar’s Kelsey MacDonald has led through the first two rounds of her title defence in the Scottish Under-21 girls’ Open Stroke-Play Championship at Dunfermline Golf Club.
With Jane Turner (Craigielaw), a shot behind after one round, falling away to a second-round 85, it looks as if only the Briggs sisters from Kilmacolm , Megan and Eilidh, lying a close second and third overnight, are the only ones who can stop the 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion completing a hat-trick of Under-21 titles.
Kelsey added a 75 to her opening par round of 72 and she would be the first to admit this was not one of her best efforts. She had no birdies and dropped shots at the short fifth, the 10th and long 18th.
Eilidh, the younger of the Briggs girls and the Renfrewshire county champion, took over second place with a 72 to be one shot off the pace on 148. Eilidh birdied the long third and the six but dropped shots at the fourth and 14th in halves of 34 and 36.
Megan, Scottish Women’s Champion in 2009, also had a 72. After her disatrous 9 at the 6th yesterday she had an outward half of two-under-par, with birdies at two long holes, the third and seventh. Unfortunately 2 bogeys in the 2nd 9 spoilt the charge !

Good luck to all the West of Scotland Players tomorrow

Scottish Girls Quarter and Semi Finals

After a day of shock results at windswept Eyemouth, Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe), 25th of the 32 qualifiers, will play the No 3 seed, Lesley Atkins (Gullane), in an all-Lothians 18-hole final of the Scottish girls’ championship tomorrow morning.
McIntosh toppled the No 1 seed and hot favourite Rachael Watton (Craigielaw) by 3 and 1 in the quarter-finals and then, with the wind increasing in intensity, Kate KO’d the No 4 seed, Gemma Dryburgh from Aberdeen via Florida, where she is a student at the IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
Gemma could not manage a single par on the outward half in the so difficult conditions for the semi-finals and McIntosh was five up at the turn. She went on to win 6 and 5.
Lesley Atkins, a pupil a Loretto School, Musselburgh and originally a member of Minto Golf Club when she was the youngest-ever Borders women's county champion, upset the form book in the morning with a 5 and 3 win over the No 2 seed and Renfrewshire women’s county champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm).
In the afternoon, Atkins was roughly seven over par for the outward half into the gale but had a lead of two holes over the No 3 seed, Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw). MacDonald rallied in the closing stages from three to one down by winning the 15th and 16th but she four-putted to lose the 17th and the match 2 and 1.
All four semi-finalists are young enough to compete again in next year’s championship which is unusual – McIntosh is 16, Atkins 15, MacDonald 17 and Dryburgh 17.
The Ansley Reid Salver second-tier match-play competition - Kate McIntosh won it last year, incidentally - was won this year by Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus), the East of Scotland girls champion who was expected to qualify for the main event but didn’t. She beat Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) 3 and 2 in the final.
Afternoon results:

Scotland win the Bronze Medal at the European Team Championship

Scotland beat Germany 5-2 in the play-off for the bronze medals on the final day of the European women's amateur team championship at La Manga, Spain.
Spain, conquerors of the Scots in Friday's semi-finals won the gold, beating Sweden 4-3 in the championship final.
Scotland took a 3-0 grip on the match against the Germans by winning the two foursomes - Pamela Pretswell and Laura Murray, and Kelsey MacDonald and Louise Kenney, then taking the top singles with a 20th hole great win by Kelsey over Valerie Sternebeck.
Pretswell and Murray lost their singles 3 and 2, and 4 and 2 respecitvely before Jane Turner steadied the ship with her best performance of the week. The Craigielaw player beat US college circuit player Stephanie Kirchmayr 5 and 4.
That gave Scotland a winning lead and, in the tradition of these championships, any other matches still out on the course automatically stop with the player in the lead at that time declared the winner. That gave Kenney a victory although she was just one up after 12 holes on Pia Halbig.
England's form nosedived after their defeat in Thursday's quarter-finals by Scotland. They finished on a downer by losing 4.5 to 0.5 to France.

In the Loretto School Scottish U14s Girls Championship, the title went to West Kilbride’s Connie Jaffrey after she posted a tremendous two-under par 68 to edge out Clara Young from North Berwick by two shots.

Connie was a magnificent seven-under par during an exceptional ten-hole spell which included an eagle three at the par five 15th. The Ayrshire youngster’s victory could have been even more impressive but for a double-bogey five on the final hole

Scotland lose to Spain in European Team Championship

Scotland will play Germany on Saturday for the bronze medals after losing 4.5 to 2.5 at the hands of Spain today in the semi-finals of the European women's amateur team championship at La Manga, Spain.
Pamela Pretswell and Laura Murray lost at the 19th to Spain's Carlota Ciganda and Marta Silva.
Kelsey MacDonald and Louise Kenney squared it for Scotland by beating M Prat and E Folch 2 and 1.
But Spain took the singles comfortably after Carlota Ciganda gained a measure of revenge for her defeat in the "British" at Ganton by Kelsey MacDonald. Carlota won this one by one hole.
Laura Murray lost 4 and 3 to Marta Silva and Megan Briggs went down by 6 and 5 to M Prat to give Spaniard 4pt - a winning lead in a 7pt match.
Louise Kenney beat E Floch by 5 and 3 and the Pretswell v Urchequi match was declared a square match because overall it could not affect the outcome.
Spain will play Sweden in the final, having beaten them 5.5 to 1.5 today.
England, beaten 4-3 by Scotland on Thursday, beat Netherlands 3.5 to 1.5 but the best they can do is finish fifth.

Glasgow's Mhairi McKay put her poor form of this season - she has to pre-qualify (at the moment) for the Women's British Open - with a par-matching round of 71 to be sharing sixth place, only two shots behind the leader, American Brittany Lang.
And Curtis Cup amateur Sally Watson (Elie and Earlsferry) can be proud of a 75 which put her ahead of many established names on the LPGA Tour.

Karen Maxwell tells a joke at the Scottish Seniors Supper

D&A's Karen Maxwell told a joke at the Scottish Seniors Supper last week as did D&A's Helen Faulds and Renfrewshire's Marion Stewart. The SLGA sang a song, the West/East Vets did a wee turn as did the Ladies from Muir of Ord. Other performances took place that evening as well. Finally D&A Past Captain Helen MacGregor gave the vote of thanks.

Strong field for Scottish Girls’ Championship at Eyemouth

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmalcolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), who both play off scratch, head a strong entry for the Scottish Girls’ Championship at Eyemouth Golf Club from July 13-17.
It is a first National Championship for the Borders Club and 64 girls – 43 boasting single figure handicaps – will be aiming to lift the trophy won by Ailsa Bain (Peebles) last year.
Eilidh and Rachael are both members of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Performance B squad and they are joined in the line-up by three of their colleagues - Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Lesley Atkins (Gullane) and Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw).
The field also includes two sets of sisters - Natasha and Alexandra Qayum, from Ranfurly Castle and Alison and Catherine Goodwin from Glenbervie.
The Championship consists of two rounds of stroke-play qualifying (July13-14) with the top 32 advancing to the match-play knock-out stage. The next 16 girls qualify for the Ansley Salver.
The 18 hole final takes place on Saturday, July 17 at 9.00 am.

SCOTLAND MAKE THE 1ST FLIGHT MATCHES AND PLAY ENGLAND

A nine-shot improvement from an opening 82 to a second-round par 73 at La Manga by Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and a solid 74 by St Rule Trophy winner Laura Murray (Alford) cemented Scotland's qualification for the championship flight.
West of Scotland's Pamela Pretswell and Megan Briggs had a 76 and 77 repectively to help the team qualify.
However the Scots' sixth place means they will play third-placed England in the first round of the match-play series.
Sweden (730) were the top qualifiers ahead of Spain (731) with England (741) third, Denmark (750) fourth, Germany (756) fifth, Scotland (757) sixth, Netherlands (759) seventh.
Austria and France both finished on 760 and France were placed eighth under some tie-breaker system which did not involve the usual comparision of second-round totals as Austria had the better second round total (377 to 383).

European Team Championship at La Manga

Scotland's women's team cannot afford any slips in the second qualifying round of the European team championship if they are to make the championship flight of eight at La Manga, Spain.
After the first qualifying round, the Scots are sharing seventh place on 379 with Norway.
Scottish champion and British championship beaten finalist Kelsey MacDonald had a disappointing round of nine-over-par 82 and her score was discarded. The Nairn Dunbar player and Stirling student, perhaps still tired after her Ganton exertions, had a double bogey 7 at the long ninth and had only one birdie, at the fourth, in halves of 41.
The best Scots score were a pair of 74s from Curtis Cupper Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) and British universities stroke-play champion Jane Turner (Craigielaw).
Pamela had halves of 39 and 35 with a couple of birdies, at the 12th and 18th.
Jane, who caddied for Kelsey in the closing rounds of the "British," rallied from a double bogey 7 at the long sixth to record halves of 38 and 37. She birdied the long fourth, the long ninth and the short 12th.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), Laura Murray (Alford) and Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) all had 77s. Kenney dropped three shots to par at the sixth and seventh, having started at the 10th.
Sweden are leading on 361 from England, with Spain third on 368. Ireland (387) and Wales (391) look unlikely to make the championship flight.

Scots struggle in European girls' team championship in Denmark

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH GOLF UNION
Teenage twins Leona and Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell), now playing off plus 3, started Ireland’s gold medal defence in convincing fashion to tie second place after the first qualifying round of the 2010 European U18 Team Championships tee off at Aalborg, Denmark.
Leona birdied the ninth hole to turn one under par and a level par back nine saw her sign for a 70, just one shot behind best-of-the-day Celeine Boutier (France). With three scores to count from 4, sister Lisa was one shot further back on level par after blitzing her back nine in one under the card. Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) was three over par for both nines in her round of 77 while Laura McCarthy (Muskerry) struggled on the inward journey to return 81.
Ireland are sharing second place, four shots behind France, after a good day’s work. The qualifying concludes tomorrow with a second 18 holes stroke-play after which the eight teams with the best 36-hole totals contest the medals Thursday through Saturday.
As Ireland lies six shots inside the cut for eight place, Team Captain Sinead Keane (Curragh) is pleased with her team’s start that sees them well positioned to defend their Gold medal won in Finland last year.
END OF NEWS RELEASE BY THE IRISH LGU
Scotland are not nearly so well placed as the Irish girls.
Rachael Watton with a six-over-par 77 (41-36) was the best of the four, following by Germany-based Rachael Taylor 80 (40-40) and Eilidh Briggs 82 (44-38) and Alyson McKechin 82 (39-43).
The Scots are lying in 16th place on 239. The teams currently sharing seventh place - Belgium and England - are on 224, which shows how much the Scottish girls would have to improve to make into the top eight who go forward to the championship match-play flight.
The Scots look destined for one of the lower flights.

Kelsey loses in the Final of the British Amateur

Kelsey MacDonald and Kelly Tidy --- Photo courtesy of Colin Farquharson

Stirling student Kelsey MacDonald just failed to pull off the Scottish-British women;’s amateur golf championships double at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire today.
Winner of her national title at Craigielaw five weeks ago, 19-year-old Kelsey lost by 2 and 1 in the 18-hole final to 18-year-old Lancashire lass Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale).
Kelsey staged a magnificent comeback to beat former US Curtis Cup player Meghan Stasi at the 19th hole in the morning semi-finals after losing the first four holes.
But, after twice taking a two-hole lead in the final, the Nairn Dunbar player – her family home is just across the road from the first tee – seemed to tire in her eighth competitive round in five days over a course with cavernous bunkers, narrow, tree-lined fairways and gorse bushes that could hide an army.
From two up on the 12th tee, MacDonald slid to two down by losing the 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th and a half in four at the short 17th gave Tidy victory and a place in the field for the Ricoh Women’s British Open over her home Birkdale course next month.
Tidy, twice beaten in the British girls championship final and a Junior Solheim and Junior Ryder Cup player, was several over par in the final, having been two or three under in winning her semi-fnal by 5 and 3 over Canadian 18-year-old Rebecca Lee-Bentham from Toronto.
“I can’t really make the excuse that I was tired over the last few holes, Kelly just played them better than I did. Of course, I’m disappointed but if you had offered me at the beginning of the week a place in the British final, win or lose, I would have grabbed it. I got a couple of bad bounces in the final but over the week I had some good scores and some good wins,” said Kelsey.

Final – Tidy beat MacDonald 2 and 1.

Pamela loses in the First Round by Spanish Star Carlota Ciganda

Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald scored “the best match-play win” of her career to enter the last 16 of the British women’s open amateur golf championship at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire on the windiest day of a pleasantly warm week.
Later in the evening Curtis Cup 18-year-old Sally Watson made it two Scots in the third round with a three-under-par performance.
MacDonald, a 19-year-old Stirling University student from Nairn beat the Spanish ace, Carlota Ciganda by one hole in a match of rare quality.
In the 1st round two other Scots, Curtis Cup player Pamela Pretswell and Robert Gordon University student Jane Turner were beaten.
Pamela shot four birdies but still lost narrowly on the last green to Spanish ace Carlota Ciganda who won the title 3 years ago and lost in the final last year.

Pamela was two up on Ciganda after eight holes but the Spaniard hit a purple patch to turn that around and lead by two holes on the 13th tee.
Ciganda finally knocked out the Scot by holing a 30ft putt at the last for a one-hole victory after a great match. Ciganda had a final tally of one eagle and three birdies. Both players were under par at the finish of quality tie.
"I was beaten on the last but I enjoyed it tremendously playing against such a very good player," said sporting Pamela.

Pamela through to the Matchplay Stages of the British Amateur Championships

Caroline Hedwall earns top seed among 64 qualifiers at Ganton
Six Scots make it through to "British" match-play

COLIN FARQUHARSON REPORTS FROM GANTON --- Kirkwoodgolf
Six Scots
made it through to the match-play stages of the British women’s open amateur golf championship at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire on another warm, sunny day when top seed, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, declared she would have loved to have played in the Curtis Cup before she winds up her stellar amateur career at the end of the present season.
“This is my last season as an amateur because I have quit Oklahoma State University after two years to go to the Tour Schools on both sides of the Atlantic at the end of the season,” said 21-year-old European women’s champion,
Hedwall was No 1 of the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the “British,” adding a three-under-par 70 for a three-under-par total of 143.
Top Scottish qualifier as 10th seed was Curtis Cup teenager Sally Watson (Elie and Earslferry) with scores of 72 and 76 for 148. Sally had only one birdie to her credit in the second round – a 4 at the long 15th but she did keep her ration of bogeys down to four, at the fifth, seventh, 11th and 18th
That’s no mean feat on a testing course where the trees, gorse bushes and steep-sided bunkers punish heavily any misdirect shots.
Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) qualified with ease in 13th place on 149 with rounds of 76 and 73.
“There was a stronger swirling wind today that made club selection a wee bit more difficult,” said the Stirling student who must have made the right choices when she had four 3s in a row from the second in an outward two-under-par 35.
Auchterarder’s Emily Ogilvy had more eagles than even the leaders over the 36-hole eliminator – two in Tuesday’s 76 and one at the 496yd fifth in a second-round 79 for 155. Emily qualified in 39th place.
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), the second Curtis Cup Scot in the field, slumped from 75 to 81 yesterday (Wed) for 156 which gave her 45th place in the draw. After six straight pars, the Glasgow University student’s troubles began with a triple bogey 7 at the seventh in an outward 40 and she later had a double bogey 5 at the short 17th in halves of 40 and 41 with birdies at the eighth and 18th not enough to offset the mistakes.
Laura Murray from Alford and Craigielaw’s Jane Turner, a student at Robert Gordon University, were two of 15 players on the limit mark of 12-over-par 158. There was room for only eight of them in the draw of 32 first-round match-play ties.
For the first time in this championship there was no lengthy play-off as a tie-breaker.
Instead a card countback did the elimination work.
Both Murray and Turner survived the countback, thanks to their second rounds. Laura, started badly and finished weakly but played brilliantly in the holes in between to return a 76, six shots better than on Tuesday, while Jane had a grandstand finish of four birdies in a row from the 14th for a 75, having started her round with two double-bogey 6s. Some recovery!
Majorca-based 16-year-old Scot Lauren Mackin had an off day following her sparkling first-round 73. Her score soared to 85 and she was one of those eliminated on 158.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), last year’s Scottish champion, bowed out with a 76 for 159.
Two members of the recent GB and I Curtis Cup team failed to qualify. Hannah Barwood (Knowle) had an 82 for 159 while Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down Ladies), the outstanding player in Mary McKenna’s squad in the States, went out with scores of 84 and 77 for 161.
