500 Years of Golfing History Successfully Tees Off at the National Library of Scotland
The history of golf is the focus of a unique exhibition at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, with the earliest known rules of the game featuring alongside many of the game's rarest artefacts.
A Swing Through Time exhibition was launched to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, and showcases some of the most iconic items in the history of the game. Over 200 items are on display, including letters, diaries, photographs, account books, portraits, trophies, written club records and early golf clubs and golf balls.
The exhibition featuresitems from as far back as the 15th century, highlighting the significant changes that altered the course of the game and the influences which guided its destiny, turning it into the game we know and love today.
Amongst the many golfing gems are the earliest known written rules drawn up in 1744 by the world's oldest golf club, The Company of Gentlemen Golfers, as well as the club's first ever minute book and the silver golf club donated by Edinburgh Town Councilas a prize for its competition at the world-famous Leith Links.
The National Library of Scotland's Olive Geddes, curator of A Swing Through Time, said: "It is fantastic to be able to bring together, for the first time, some of the most important items relating to the formation and development of the game in Scotland. The origins of golf are a matter of mystery and controversy and only by piecing together the evidence of early documents can we gain a true insight into the earliest ages of the sport.
"The exhibition tells the story of golf over 500 years from its roots as a frivolous pastime, frowned upon by the authorities as dangerous and a nuisance, banned by both Parliament and the Kirk, through to its growing acceptance among the nobility and its popularity among the wider population."
A Swing Through Time exhibitionis open to the public until Sunday, 14 November, at the National Library of Scotland, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. Entry is free. For further information log onto www.nls.uk

From the LGU WEBSITE England and Scotland start with wins at Bangor Defending champions England made an impressive start to the Girls’ Home Internationals by beating Ireland 7 ½-1 ½ at Bangor Golf Club, Northern Ireland today. In the other match, Scotland beat Wales 6-3 .
England took a grip on the outcome of their opening match by making a 3-0 clean sweep of the foursomes against the Irish.
They followed that up with wins in the singles by Elizabeth Mallett (6 and 5), Bronte Law (3 and 1), Lauren Taylor (2 holes) and Alexandra Peters (2 and 1). The game between Georgia Hall (England) and Anna Courtney (Ireland) finished all square.
Elizabeth Mallett, still on a high from her victory last week in the English Girls’ Championship, was three up on Irish girls champion Laura Grant after five holes. She added further successes at the eighth, ninth and 10th to be six up and halves at the next three holes ended the match.
Bronte Law was twice two up on Sarah Kelly before the turn and then drew away from her opponent on the inward half. Law won the 11th and 12th to go four up but Helly was not ready to throw in the towel. The Irish player hit back with wins at the 14th and 15th to get it back to two down with three to play. Law clinched a 3 and 1 victory by winning the 17th.
Lauren Taylor was four down after six holes to Laura McCarthy but hit back hard to win the seventh, eighth, ninth, 11th and 12th, transforming her position into a one-hole lead. McCarthy squared the seesaw match at the 16th but Taylor finished the better, winning the 17th and 18th for a two-hole victory. Alexandra Peters and Paula Grant had a ding dong struggled for most of the way with only one hole in it either way when the game wasn’t at level pegging. All square on the 16th tee, Peters won the 16th and 17th for a 2 and 1 win.
Georgia Hall and Anna Courtney shared the honours after the English player held a two-hole lead at the eighth and again at the 11th. Courtney kept plugging away and was rewarded with a win at the 15th and another at the 17th to square the match. Appropriately, the 18th was halved in birdies. Neither player deserved to lose. Ireland came out top in only one singles but it was a good one with Emma O’Driscoll winning the lead-off singles. She beat the English women’s champion Hayley Davis by 4 and 2 in a quality match studded with birdies. Emma won the first with the birdie but Hayley won the second and fourth with birdies.
O’Driscoll squared the match at the seventh and then took over the driving seat by winning the eighth, 10th and 11th to forge three up. Davis won back the 14th but the Irish player was not to be denied a memorable win. She won the 15th and 16th for victory. Scotland carried over a 2pt morning lead into the singles against Wales and at one stage of the afternoon action, it looked as if they would need it resist the Welsh comeback in the singles.
Rachel Watton had an outstanding win for Scotland over Wales’ Amy Boulden in the top singles in that match. Boulden won the third and fourth but was quickly pulled back to square by Watton who won the fifth and seventh. Boulden edged ahead again at the 11th but the tenacious Scot squared it at the 14th then took the lead for the first time at the 16th. Halves at the last two holes gave Watton victory by one hole.
Katie Bradbury beat the new Scottish girls champion Lesley Atkins by 3 and 2 after striking early. The Welsh girl won the first two holes and added the seventh and ninth, without loss, to be four up at the turn.
Atkins found her form to win the 10th and 11th but Bradbury went back into a three-hole lead by capturing the 12th and four halved holes ended the match on the 16th green. Chloe Williams scored the second win of the day for Wales, beating Alyson McKechin 5 and 4. The Welsh girl won the first, third, sixth, seventh and ninth to be a commanding five holes to the good at the turn. McKechin scores her only success of the afternoon at the 13th but lost to the 14th and the match.
Hannah McCook was a 7 and 5 winner for Scotland over Kelly Miller. After the first two holes were exchanged, Hannah won the fourth, fifth and sixth but lost the seventh to be two up on the ninth tee after a half at the eighth. McCook suddenly raised her pace to win the next five holes in a row for the match, going from two up to seven up over the space of six holes. Scotland were assured of at least a draw with 4 1/2pt in the bag but they got the match-winning point from Eilidh Briggs who beat the Welsh girls champion Rachel Lewis by 4 and 3 in the sixth singles.
Eilidh won the third, fourth, fifth and sixth but thereafter each hole was halved – seven in a row – until Rachel scored her only success at the 14th. Briggs won the 15th for victory.
The last match to finish – Ailsa Summers v India Friswell finished all square after the Welsh girl had led by two holes after 10 and again after 14. Ailsa, however, came back from two down with three to play to win the 16th and 17th and halve the last
Kelly Tidy looks to complete rare double at the 2010 Girls' British Open Amateur Championship
Kelly Tidy from Bolton has the opportunity to become only the third player in history to win both the Ladies'and Girls' British Open Amateur titles in the same year. The only other British player to achieve the feat was Mickey Walker from Leeds in 1972, while Spain's Belen Mozo also achieved the prestigious double in 2006 when both tournaments were played in Northern Ireland.
Kelly Tidy won the Ladies' British Open Amateur title at Ganton in June but is still young enough to compete in the Girls' Championship when it is played at Royal Belfast Golf Club from 9th – 13th August. Kelly, a Junior Solheim Cup and Junior Ryder Cup player, has twice lost in the final of the British Girls' Championship, once to Henrietta Brockway (England) at Southerndown in 2007 when she was 15 and also to Laura Gonzalez-Escallon (Belgium) in the 2008 final when the Championship was played at Monfieth. She did not play in last year's Championship as it clashed with the Junior Solheim Cup Match which she was competing in.
The Championship has once again attracted a top quality field and has had to be reduced by ballot to 144 players. Two strokeplay qualifying rounds will take place on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th August to decide the top 64 qualifiers for the matchplay stages.
Perrine Delacoure (France) who won the title at West Lancashire Golf Club last year and Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies') last year's runner-up and recent winner of the English Girls' Championship are both in this year's field and will be bidding to reach the final again.
Other notables include Lisa and Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) who at 15 became the youngest ever Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team players when they competed in the 2010 Curtis Cup and Hayley Davis (Ferndown) the winner of the 2010 English Women's Championship.
Julie Yang, the 15-year-old South Korean girl who has been based in Scotland since last September when she moved from Arizona to Musselburgh to become a pupil at Loretto School is also one to watch. Her titles this year include the Welsh Women's Open Amateur Stroke-Play, the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schoolgirls and the Danish Amateur Championship. She has since then also came through the qualifying process and played in the 2010 Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale.
The overseas challenge includes entries from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States.
Three of the girls named in the European Junior Ryder Cup team for the match against the United States on September 28-29 at Gleneagles are among the entries – Isabella Dellert (2010 European Girls' Young Masters' Champion), Manon Molle (France) and Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale).
The winner receives the Challenge Cup and the beaten finalist is awarded the Leven Trophy. The Lady Heathcoat-Amory Memorial Medal goes to the leading qualifier while vouchers will be awarded for the lowest scores in the qualifying rounds. The Todd Bowl is awarded to the lowest U16 player in the qualifying rounds while the lowest U14 player will receive a voucher. An international team event is also played in conjunction with the two stroke-play qualifying rounds.

Pamela Pretswell in action at the Austrian women's amateur championship
This week I have been playing in the Austrian Ladies International Championship at Murhof Golf Club http://www.murhof.at/ , the venue for the European Ladies Team Championship in 2011.
I took the opportunity to play in this European Ladies ranking event by flying directly from the International European Ladies' Amateur Championship at Golf & Spa Resort Kunetickà Hora in the Czech Republic, where I finished in 6th place with a 72 hole score of 3 under par. I am really grateful for the support provided by the Scottish Ladies Golf Association and our sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management which allowed me to play in these events. I finished runner-up in this 72 hole championship with a final total of 9 under par. I scored a 6 under 66 in the first round, including 9 birdies, to lead the championship and followed that up with a par 72 and a 2 under 70 yesterday to lead by one shot at 8 under going into the final 18 holes. I shot a 1 under round of 71 today, including 2 birdies, for a 9 under par total of 279. Unfortunately, this was one shot more than winner Klara Spilkova (Czech Republic) who started in 4th place today and played in the group in front of me. Klara shot a 6 under 66 with 6 birdies over the final 13 holes, including birdies at 17 and 18 to finish one ahead on 278.
Although it was disappointing to be pipped at the post after leading throughout the championship, I have been delighted with the way that I have been playing during the last few weeks. I am starting to benefit from playing more regularly now that I have a summer break from my studies at Glasgow University and really pleased to score 12 under in my last 8 rounds. Looking forward to the rest of my season and to playing the Murhof course again with the Scottish Ladies team at the European Team Championship next year - and perhaps doing even better than the fantastic bronze medal that we won at La Manga, Spain in July.
From left to right: is Linzi Allan, Louise Duncan and Samantha Cowan.
Despite a very strong north wind at West Kilbride today, the girls still managed to produce excellent scores and a high percentage of magic two's were recorded.
Local girl Linzi Allan, who has completed her 1st year on a golf scholarship at university in Kansas, had the best scratch, a 78 (SS 73) and won the Nancy Chisholm Trophy. The leading nett prize and winner of the Kandy Bar Cup went to Samantha Cowan (Cochrane Castle) who had a splendid 68 playing off 15. In the Pre-handicap competition, 10 year old Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) was the best overall and won the June Kerr Cup. Louise only started playing golf this year and already is showing lots of promise.
Local girls and visitors alike were a delight to have and we look forward to them returning next year.

The 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion from the Nairn Dunbar club signed off in champion style with a two-under-par 70, the joint lowest round of the tournament, for a one-over-par total of 217. That gave her a four-stroke winning margin from last year’s Scottish Women’s Champion, Renfrewshire's Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) (72-271) with Gillian Monteith (Portpatrick Dunskey) giving her best performance in a national tournament to finish third on 272, also closing with a 72. Megan had a little bit of everything in her round today - an eagle 3 at the long 15th, birdies at the long seventh, 11th, long 17th and long 18th and then, on the downside, a double bogey 5 at the short 16th and other bogeys at the fourth, eighth, 10th and 14th in halves of 36. She fought well to try an recover from her one bad hole in the 1st round of the tournament when she had a 5 over par 9 at the 6th.
Eilidh Briggs, the 2010 Renfrewshire champion, finished fourth with a 77 for 225 and won the Menzies Cup for the best performance over the three rounds by an Under-18 year old.
Well done to Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who finished well to be up in the top 10 of the tournament
Two late bogeys knocked back Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) into a share of ninth place at the halfway stage of the European women's individual amateur championship at Kuneticka Hora in the Czech Republic. The Scottish Curtis Cup player has scored 70 and 72 for 142 to be six shots behind the two-stroke leader, Spain's Marta Silva with scores of 67 and 69 for 136. HOW THEY STAND Par 144 (2x72) 136 Marta Silva (Spain) 67 69. 138 Sara Schoberg (Switzerland) 70 68, Sophie Popov (Germany) 69 69. 139 Sara Monberg (Denmark) 72 67, Julia Neumann (Germany) 71 68. 140 Hannah Burke (England) 72 68 141 Mireia Prat (Spain) 72 69, Valerie Sternebeck (Germany) 70 71 Sottish scores: 142 Pamela Pretswell (Scotland) 70 72, 147 Louise Kenney (Scotland) 73 74 (jt 43rd). 162 Laura Murray (Scotland) 78 84 (jt 136th).
Nairn Dunbar’s Kelsey MacDonald has led through the first two rounds of her title defence in the Scottish Under-21 girls’ Open Stroke-Play Championship at Dunfermline Golf Club. With Jane Turner (Craigielaw), a shot behind after one round, falling away to a second-round 85, it looks as if only the Briggs sisters from Kilmacolm , Megan and Eilidh, lying a close second and third overnight, are the only ones who can stop the 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion completing a hat-trick of Under-21 titles. Kelsey added a 75 to her opening par round of 72 and she would be the first to admit this was not one of her best efforts. She had no birdies and dropped shots at the short fifth, the 10th and long 18th. Eilidh, the younger of the Briggs girls and the Renfrewshire county champion, took over second place with a 72 to be one shot off the pace on 148. Eilidh birdied the long third and the six but dropped shots at the fourth and 14th in halves of 34 and 36. Megan,Scottish Women’s Champion in 2009, also had a 72. After her disatrous 9 at the 6th yesterday she had an outward half of two-under-par, with birdies at two long holes, the third and seventh. Unfortunately 2 bogeys in the 2nd 9 spoilt the charge !
Good luck to all the West of Scotland Players tomorrow

After a day of shock results at windswept Eyemouth, Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe), 25th of the 32 qualifiers, will play the No 3 seed, Lesley Atkins (Gullane), in an all-Lothians 18-hole final of the Scottish girls’ championship tomorrow morning. McIntosh toppled the No 1 seed and hot favourite Rachael Watton (Craigielaw) by 3 and 1 in the quarter-finals and then, with the wind increasing in intensity, Kate KO’d the No 4 seed, Gemma Dryburgh from Aberdeen via Florida, where she is a student at the IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Gemma could not manage a single par on the outward half in the so difficult conditions for the semi-finals and McIntosh was five up at the turn. She went on to win 6 and 5. Lesley Atkins, a pupil a Loretto School, Musselburgh and originally a member of Minto Golf Club when she was the youngest-ever Borders women's county champion, upset the form book in the morning with a 5 and 3 win over the No 2 seed and Renfrewshire women’s county champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm). In the afternoon, Atkins was roughly seven over par for the outward half into the gale but had a lead of two holes over the No 3 seed, Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw). MacDonald rallied in the closing stages from three to one down by winning the 15th and 16th but she four-putted to lose the 17th and the match 2 and 1. All four semi-finalists are young enough to compete again in next year’s championship which is unusual – McIntosh is 16, Atkins 15, MacDonald 17 and Dryburgh 17. The Ansley Reid Salver second-tier match-play competition - Kate McIntosh won it last year, incidentally - was won this year by Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus), the East of Scotland girls champion who was expected to qualify for the main event but didn’t. She beat Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) 3 and 2 in the final. Afternoon results: CHAMPIONSHIP Semi-finals Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) bt Gemma Dryburgh (IMG Academies) 6 and 5. Lesley Atkins (Gullane) bt Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) 2 and 1.
ANSLEY REID SALVER Final Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus) bt Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) 3 and 2.

Scotland beat Germany 5-2 in the play-off for the bronze medals on the final day of the European women's amateur team championship at La Manga, Spain. Spain, conquerors of the Scots in Friday's semi-finals won the gold, beating Sweden 4-3 in the championship final. Scotland took a 3-0 grip on the match against the Germans by winning the two foursomes - Pamela Pretswell and Laura Murray, and Kelsey MacDonald and Louise Kenney, then taking the top singles with a 20th hole great win by Kelsey over Valerie Sternebeck. Pretswell and Murray lost their singles 3 and 2, and 4 and 2 respecitvely before Jane Turner steadied the ship with her best performance of the week. The Craigielaw player beat US college circuit player Stephanie Kirchmayr 5 and 4. That gave Scotland a winning lead and, in the tradition of these championships, any other matches still out on the course automatically stop with the player in the lead at that time declared the winner. That gave Kenney a victory although she was just one up after 12 holes on Pia Halbig. England's form nosedived after their defeat in Thursday's quarter-finals by Scotland. They finished on a downer by losing 4.5 to 0.5 to France. Results: CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT Final SPAIN 4, SWEDEN 3

Scotland will play Germany on Saturday for the bronze medals after losing 4.5 to 2.5 at the hands of Spain today in the semi-finals of the European women's amateur team championship at La Manga, Spain. Pamela Pretswell and Laura Murray lost at the 19th to Spain's Carlota Ciganda and Marta Silva. Kelsey MacDonald and Louise Kenney squared it for Scotland by beating M Prat and E Folch 2 and 1. But Spain took the singles comfortably after Carlota Ciganda gained a measure of revenge for her defeat in the "British" at Ganton by Kelsey MacDonald. Carlota won this one by one hole. Laura Murray lost 4 and 3 to Marta Silva and Megan Briggs went down by 6 and 5 to M Prat to give Spaniard 4pt - a winning lead in a 7pt match. Louise Kenney beat E Floch by 5 and 3 and the Pretswell v Urchequi match was declared a square match because overall it could not affect the outcome. Spain will play Sweden in the final, having beaten them 5.5 to 1.5 today. England, beaten 4-3 by Scotland on Thursday, beat Netherlands 3.5 to 1.5 but the best they can do is finish fifth.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION Eilidh Briggs (Kilmalcolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), who both play off scratch, head a strong entry for the Scottish Girls’ Championship at Eyemouth Golf Club from July 13-17. It is a first National Championship for the Borders Club and 64 girls – 43 boasting single figure handicaps – will be aiming to lift the trophy won by Ailsa Bain (Peebles) last year. Eilidh and Rachael are both members of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Performance B squad and they are joined in the line-up by three of their colleagues - Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Lesley Atkins (Gullane) and Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw). The field also includes two sets of sisters - Natasha and Alexandra Qayum, from Ranfurly Castle and Alison and Catherine Goodwin from Glenbervie. The Championship consists of two rounds of stroke-play qualifying (July13-14) with the top 32 advancing to the match-play knock-out stage. The next 16 girls qualify for the Ansley Salver. The 18 hole final takes place on Saturday, July 17 at 9.00 am.
A nine-shot improvement from an opening 82 to a second-round par 73 at La Manga by Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and a solid 74 by St Rule Trophy winner Laura Murray (Alford) cemented Scotland's qualification for the championship flight. West of Scotland's Pamela Pretswell and Megan Briggs had a 76 and 77 repectively to help the team qualify. However the Scots' sixth place means they will play third-placed England in the first round of the match-play series. Sweden (730) were the top qualifiers ahead of Spain (731) with England (741) third, Denmark (750) fourth, Germany (756) fifth, Scotland (757) sixth, Netherlands (759) seventh. Austria and France both finished on 760 and France were placed eighth under some tie-breaker system which did not involve the usual comparision of second-round totals as Austria had the better second round total (377 to 383).
