LGU Press Release
Maureen Lockett –President
Mrs. Lockett will be the 23rd President since the position was instigated in 1908 and will commence her three years in office in succession to Mrs. Joan Neville.
Having served as Chairman of the Ladies’ Golf Union in 2002, Maureen will bring a wealth of golf knowledge and experience to the role of President. A keen golfer since taking up the game as a junior at Thonock Golf Club, now The Gainsborough Golf Club, she played to a high standard, representing Yorkshire in the early seventies and achieving a handicap of 2.
Always one to put something back into the game she loves, Maureen became involved in golf administration in the late seventies and served as Club Captain and Centenary Lady President at Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, where she is now an Honorary Member, and as Yorkshire County Captain. More recently, she served as President of the Yorkshire Ladies’ County Golf Association.
Maureen’s skills as an administrator soon got her noticed at national level, and she was Chairman of the English Ladies’ Golf Association in 1995, before taking on the role of English Councillor on the Ladies’ Golf Union between 1999 and 2002. One of her main interests is junior golf, and, as an original member of the English Junior Golf Partnership, she remains committed to encouraging junior participation in the sport.
Husband Brian, grown up children Julia and Christopher, grandsons Alan, Tony and Marcus, and her sprightly 95 year old mother are delighted at Maureen’s nomination as President of the Ladies’ Golf Union and offer their full support in her term of office.
Maureen says “I still find it hard to believe that I have been invited to take on this prestigious position but I will do my best to uphold the long traditions of the LGU.
These are exciting and challenging times for ladies’ golf but I firmly believe that the Ladies’ Golf Union has an important role to play. The changing needs of our younger golfers must be catered for while we should also endeavour to maintain the legacies of the past upon which our modern game is based.
I look forward to supporting the ongoing modernisation initiatives and also to meeting many of you in the coming months and years”.
Brigid McCaw –Chairman
Brigid is a member and past Captain of Royal County Down Ladies’ Golf Club and has been involved in golf administration for a number of years at both club and National level. As a Trustee and Honorary Secretary of the club she has experience in various aspects of club administration while in a playing capacity she has represented the club on a number of occasions in District Inter-Club Teams.
A stint as the club’s Junior Convenor saw her bring home the Smurfit title on 3 occasions, an association with Junior Golf which she continued through District and National Level. Brigid has served as a junior selector at both District and National Levels while also captaining various successful girls’ national teams over the years.
Brigid has passed the R&A referee’s examination on two occasions and has officiated at many major championships and international tournaments including the Curtis Cup, the Vagliano Trophy and the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
Brigid served full terms on the executive committees of both District and ILGU Councils before joining the Executive of the LGU in 2006 where she has served on the LGU Rules and Regulations Committee for the last three years.
Brigid worked for many years as a production assistant for Ulster Television but since she retired has been kept fully occupied in golf administration. In anticipation of her year in office she said:
“I feel honoured to be elected Chairman of the Ladies Golf Union. I know that a great deal of work lies in the year ahead but I look forward to working closely with Council and our Management Team on progressing the implementation of the Business Plan and most importantly to be amongst the Players and Officials at our Championships.”
Brigid lives in Newcastle, Northern Ireland with her husband Harry, a past Captain of both the Royal & Ancient and Royal County Down Golf Club. They have three children, Gordon, Anita and Kenneth and five grandchildren.
Catherine Booth (Ireland), Nancy Chisholm (Scotland), Joan Neville (Wales) and Sue Johnson (England) – Vice Presidents
The Executive Council has also invited four former office bearers to become Honorary Vice Presidents of the Ladies’ Golf Union in recognition of the work they have done for ladies’ golf and their continued loyalty to, and support of, the LGU
Outgoing President Joan Neville (Wales) will remain actively involved in supporting the LGU on her appointment as a Vice President. Joan, LGU President from 2007-09, has been unstinting in her work for the LGU. Her vast knowledge of golf, hard work and great sense of humour with which she has fulfilled her role has been greatly appreciated by players and officials alike. Joan says “the best years of my life have been spent with the LGU and the invitation to become a Vice President is the pinnacle of my association. I can assure you that I will continue to support this wonderful organisation and look forward to following the changes due to come in the next few years”.
Catherine Booth (Ireland), President of the LGU from 2004-2007, first became involved in golf administration in the late 1970s and served on both the ILGU Central Council and the LGU Executive Council. She was Chairman of the Curtis Cup Committee played in Killarney in 1996, when Great Britain & Ireland last won the matches. Catherine is “delighted to be nominated as a Vice President of the LGU at an exciting time in women’s golf, when the LGU and Home Countries are addressing issues for the long term good of the game”.
After contributing to the game of golf in many capacities at club, county and national level, Nancy Chisholm (Scotland) served as LGU Chairman in 1997 and SLGA President from 2003-2007. A lifelong member of Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club, Nancy continues to play golf to an enviable standard, and cites her favourite club and deadliest weapon as “Father’s antique hickory jigger!” Nancy is “thrilled to be invited to become an Honorary Vice President of LGU, which I hold in high esteem”.
The fourth new Vice President is Sue Johnson (England). A well known character in Yorkshire golfing circles, Sue was LGU Chairman in 1994 and President from 2001-04. Sue responded with delight to her invitation to become a vice President and stated “I am mindful of the privilege bestowed on me and pleased to be given the opportunity to continue to support the LGU. Over the years of my involvement in ladies’ golf, I have made many friends and had such happy times. I feel very fortunate to be awarded this honour.”
The LGU is in the process of implementing its Business Plan which was approved at last year’s AGM, and the Executive Council is pleased to confirm that Shona Malcolm will continue in the post of Chief Executive Officer to drive the ongoing modernisation initiatives.

Pamela Feggans earns full playing rights on the European Tour
Lynn Kenny finished third behind Sweden's Anna Nordqvist (279)
The Curtis Cup player Krystle Caithness finished joint seventh on 289 with a 73 for three-under-par 289
Vikki Laing from Musselburgh, signed off with a 71, the best score by a Scot on the last day, for one-over-par 293.
Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire had a final round of 76 for three-over 295.
Curtis Cup player and Scottish women's amateur champion Michele Thomson from Ellon bogeyed the very last hole for a 78 and unfortunately missed out by one shot from finishing among the top 30 who earned full playing rights on the 2009 Ladies European Tour at the Final Qualifying School at La Manga Golf Resort, Murcia in south-east Spain.
Michele, 20, finished on seven-over-par 299 over the par-73 South Course, her closing round being her worst of the tournament in which she had played the first three days very steadily. She will get to play in some LET events on the 2009 schedule.

Pamela Feggans makes the Ladies European Tour
They include FIVE Scots - Lynn Kenny, Krystle Caithness, Pamela Feggans, Michele Thomson and Vikki Laing. Caithness and Thomson, Curtis Cup team-mates at St Andrews last May, have been playing as amateurs but they will be turning professionals now!
All 55 players who made the cut mark of 226, seven-over-par, have secured playing rights for the 2009 season and will progress to the last day.
At the end of Thursday's final round the top 30 players will achieve a higher ranking, which will guarantee their entry into most events.
Sadly two Scots did not make it - Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) and Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle). Kylie is still an amateur but Jenna played her rookie pro year on the LET last year.

Pamela Feggans is the best West of Scotland Player at La Manga
Scottish amateur champion Michele Thomson from Ellon is finding birdies hard to come by but a three-over-par 74 at the North Course gave her a two-round tally of nine-over-par 153. Ten over par is the forecast cut-off figure after Saturday's fourth round.
Michele birdied the first and then bogeyed the second, 11th, 12th and 17th.
All the other Scots are on the wrong side of the forecast cut-off figure of 10 over par. Kylie Walker from Buchanan Castle is on 12-over-156 after a pair of 78s; Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) is on 15-over 159 after an 82 in the second round; Karyn Burns (Mearns Castle Golf Academy), obviously short of tournament play after years of coaching, is on 23-over 167. She had an 83 today.
Ladybank's Jocelyn Carthew retired after an opening round of 90.

Reset your Mouse for 2009
You should actually do this every year. Even more often is recommended by Carol Fell (the website computer guru) if you spend a lot of time on the computer.
I was shocked to see how well this works, and how far off mine was!
To re-calibrate your mouse, click and hold on the H below, then drag the H toward the d.
If it doesn't work immediately, you might want to clean your mouse, as the calibration is off.
Have a good New year --- and don't believe every word you read

Christmas Carol sends her Season's Greetings to all her Readers
The Ladies Scottish Open will not take place in 2009
I can only apologise for the delay in getting this information out to you but I have only recently received an email from Harry confirming that the Ladies Scottish Open will not be taking place next year 2009.
……“Unfortunately the Ladies Scottish Open will not be taking place next year. The majority of our sponsors were keen to sign up again (Aberdeen and EventScotland were committed) but due to the current economic climate we were not able to make up the shortfall left by one of the partners which is a great shame. We will however see how we can maybe resurrect it for 2010 so I will keep in contact with you should the situation change.”
I would appreciate if you could circulate this information as I do not have an email address for everyone.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and Good New Year and very much hope to be back in contact with you all in the not too distant future.
Many thanks
Kind regards
Lynn Mitchell

LGU endorses Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort February Festival
The entry form for the four events over six days programme - Thursday, February 12 to Tuesday, February 17 - are being highlighted on the LGU website.
Fraser Munro, the LGU's Championship Manager, who visited the resort earlier this year and was highly impressed with the resort's facilities, says: "I was really impressed by the course and the quality of the practice facilities. For me there would be no better way to prepare for the new season than by spending a week or two at Hacienda de Alamo."
One important change for the 2009 Festival is that we have opened up the Saturday-Sunday events to allow MALES to enter the St Valentine's Day pro-am and the Costa Calida Pairs.
This is to encourage competitors to be accompanied by their husbands, partners or boyfriends, who will be able to share in the weekend action.
The two main events - the 36-hole Murcia Ladies Open (Thursday-Friday) and the 36-hole Hacienda Ladies Open (Monday-Tuesday) remain ladies/girls only.
Every competitor, whether they are playing in all four events or just one, is entitled to a free practice round over the Dave Thomas-designed championship course, which this week is hosting the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's Spanish Festival (switch over to http://www.scottishgolfview.com/ to see daily reports).
There is NO minimum or maximum age limit. All we ask is that the players have a handicap of 20 or less when they are competing in the Festival.
Any queries or you want an entry form E-mailed direct to you? E-mail Tournament Controller Colin Farquharson at Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Ayrshire’s Shona Malcolm nominated as SLGA Chairman
The Board of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association is pleased to nominate Miss Shona Malcolm C.A. as Chairman of the Association for the three years from January 2009. The term of office of the current Chairman, Mrs Pat Wilson, expires at the Annual General Meeting in January 2009.
Currently Chairman of the SLGA’s Business Development Group and the “One Plan for Golf” steering group, and a Board member of clubgolf, the national junior golf initiative in Scotland, Shona will bring a wealth of golf knowledge and experience to the role of Chairman.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, Shona is currently working with the Ladies’ Golf Union to deliver the LGU’s Business Plan.
A native of Prestwick, the venue of the first Open Championship in 1860, Shona became involved in golf administration in the early eighties and served as Treasurer of the SLGA from 1996-2001, before taking on the role of Councillor on the Ladies’ Golf Union in 2007. She is a member of both Prestwick St. Nicholas and Prestwick St. Cuthbert Golf Clubs, and was Lady Captain of the latter in its Centenary Year, 1999.
The appointment of a Chairman for three years marks an important stage in the SLGA’s development which has, in recent years, seen the Association take on responsibility for handicapping, course rating and the running in Scotland of the former LGU medals, as well as the implementation of a change in business model from being an unincorporated association to a company limited by guarantee.
Pat Wilson, the present Chairman, says
“I am delighted that Shona is to become our new three year Chairman bringing continuity to the role. Shona brings, not only tremendous experience of golfing administration having been Treasurer of the SLGA and an LGU Councillor, but also vast business knowledge from her professional role as a C.A.”
Shona says
“I am very pleased to have been nominated as Chairman of the SLGA at these exciting and challenging times for ladies’ golf. The SLGA has a responsibility to protect and promote the interests of ladies’ golf in Scotland, celebrating the golfing legacies and traditions while encouraging more people to take up the sport.
I genuinely believe that golf should be accessible to anyone, of either gender, who wants to play, and look forward to working in partnership under “One Plan for Golf” with our colleagues at the Scottish Golf Union and the PGA to achieve this goal.
I look forward to contributing to the ongoing modernisation initiatives, and to meeting and consulting with many of the SLGA’s members in the coming months and years.”

Daily Mail Foursomes Finals at Dalmahoy
Due to the terrible weather over the weekend of the finals the format was changed on the first day to one Stableford round with the top four teams from 16 progressing to the semi-finals.
Loudoun Gowf (Sally Hamilton and Gale Macpherson) were lucky enough to be in the top four.
Again, due to the weather on day two, the format was changed from match-play to Stableford stroke-play and, unfortunately, we played the last four holes poorly.
To see a photo of Sally Hamilton and Gale Macpherson go to the Gillian Kirkwood Website
All in the West congratulate you both on a great achievement in getting so far in the tournament

The 2008 Greenlees Lunch and Presentation
The 2008 Greenlees Lunch and presentation took place yesterday and Mary Hardie (Captain) welcomed everyone to this years lunch at Ranfurly Castle
The new Greenlees Secretary Fiona Roger hosted the lunch and in her opening remarks she said that for one reason or another some clubs had been unable to be with us, and they had sent their apologies. Ranfurly Castle had to restrict numbers to a maximum of 60 and she hoped that this had not caused any problem.
Fiona gave a special thank you to Carol Fell. She told everyone that Carol had worked with her since last autumn to set up the availability for her to record all the fixtures dates, results and ongoing totals for all the seasons matches. She said she could not have done it without her. Always at the end of the phone when he make a mistake and needed her to sort it out!! We both hope that everyone in the clubs has benefited from what we have done and we will continue to try and make it as simple for everyone as possible. She then presented Carol with a beautiful bouquet of flowers for all her help.
Fiona went on to say that she has been involved as a player for Ranfurly since 1975 and in that year Milngavie… with team handicaps ranging from 2 to 14 headed up by Vicki Mcallister won the Greenlees trophy with 43½ points. Troon with handicaps ranging from 1 to 8 and headed up by Miss T.M. Walker and Mrs Belle Robertson both off handicaps of 1 were 2nd with 40½ points. Ranfurly Castle were relegated… records fortunately do not record how many points she contributed to the team in her first year. She also hoped that no one would record her first years effort as Greenlees Secretary
Fiona then went on to tell us all about Willeen McCallum our retired Greenlees Secretary
In all the papers and files which Willeen had given her, Fiona had come across the following: a hand written letter dated January 8th 1988 the year Willeen became Greenlees Secretary …………which she read out to everyone.
She went on to say "You ran the Greenlees league, single handed for 19 years. A fate worse than death! " "Your organisational skills, friendly manner and sense of humour stood you in good stead and we all owe you a great debt of gratitude."
" I think if I am still in charge after 19 years someone will have to shoot me and bury me at the bottom of my garden!"
She also went on to say "To be serious for a moment I don’t think anyone realises how much time and effort Willeen spent making sure that the league ran smoothly through the summers and then followed this up with the presentation lunches and December fixture meetings."
" As well as the general day to day running of the league, proposals from clubs had to be dealt with as well as any complaints from clubs - on the whole the latter were not numerous."
"But it all adds up to responsibility of running the league."
"In your time of office the 50th anniversary took place and you organised a Greenlees Jamboree over Troon Portland. A highly successful day. 3 ball best ball competition with 60 competitors. Lunch provided for some 100 people. --No mean feat of organisation "
On behalf of all the clubs Fiona thanked her for all her untiring efforts. She then presented Willeen with 2 beautifully engraved picture frames plus a voucher on behalf of all the clubs.
Willeen thanked everyone for her gift and said that the highlight of her 20 years in office was the meeting of Mrs Greenlees in 1990 at the 50th Anniversary at Troon. Mrs Greenlees got married at aged 17 , had 2 children by the age of 20 and started her golfing career at Prestwick St.Nicholas and died in 1994 aged 94 --- She also said that Rosa Maxwell of Prestwick St Nicholas --- has the full history of Mrs Greenlees (We may put the story on this website)
Willeen on the other hand started her golfing career at Ranfurly Castle . However, she now just manages to squeeze in at no 9 in the Whitecraigs team.
She also said that the rules had basically not changed over the years.
She said she had enjoyed her years as Greenlees Secretary and wished everyone the best for the future.
Ranfurly Captain Mary Hardie then presented the Trophies to all the Winners
Fiona then thanked Anne Robinson (Ranfurly Castle's Greenlees Secretary) for coordinating todays lunch and presented her with a small gift.
She then rounded off the lunch with a poem written by Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) which was very relevant to the Greenlees Trophy League and a fitting tribute to Willeen for all she did on our behalf.

After matching her opening round of two-under-par 71, Krystle is lying joint third in the individual standings.
With Kylie Walker contributing a 75, it was a better day for Scotland with a Day 3 team score of 146. They have climbed to joint 12th position - one behind England - but 25 shots behind the runaway leaders, Sweden, who are 11 shots ahead of next-best Spain with one round to go.
A top-10 finish is now the realistic target for Scotland, which would still be a creditable effort on the world amateur stage
