Renfrewshire County Winter Foursomes Finals
The final of the Winter Foursomes was played over Eastwood Golf Course this afternoon between J Lockhart and R Black (Gleddoch) and E Thomson and G Kyle (East Renfrewshire).
Evi and Gillian had to give 6 shots to the opposition ----- However, June and Roisin played wonderful golf and were out in 39 --- 3 over par to be 3 up at the turn. At the 10th hole after a tremendous chip by June, Roisin, then sank the putt for a birdie 3 to go 4 up. Gillian and Evi were then only 1 over par for the next 5 holes but were unable to claw back the deficit and were eventually defeated 4 and 3

Globespan -- Final Report
Further to the previous reports Globespan have now refunded the £30 per person handling charge for those affected by the delayed delivery of their clubs to Portugal last month (click on the travel link on the RHS).
This was after strong representations directly to Globespan and articles in the press.
Globespan admitted that they were aware that the situation was not dealt with as they would have hoped, as passengers were not kept fully updated. In the light of this they are now reviewing their procedures in dealing with offloaded baggage.
It must be emphasised you must try to book your clubs as soon as possible after booking your flight. It may be also wise to check that they will accept clubs on that flight.
These difficulties do not only apply to Globespan but can affect various flights to golfing destinations at peak golfing holiday times.
The Fells and the Faulds are happy with the outcome
BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR TRAVELS

The annual match for the Centenary Trophy between Milngavie Golf Club and Clober Golf Club was held on Sunday April 8th. Clober was the venue for the Junior Teams and the Thomson McCrone teams, while the Donald Cameron teams and Ladies teams played at Milngavie.
Results (Milngavie 1st)
Juniors 1.5 - 2.5
Thomson McCrone 2.5 - 1.5
Donald Cameron 1 - 3
Ladies 4 - 0
Final Result: - Milngavie 9 Clober 7
Photo shows Anna Telfer, Captain of Milngavie GC receiving the trophy from Jimmy Graham, Captain of Clober GC.
Anna said " I am absolutely thrilled to have won the Centenary Trophy. This competition has been running for over 35 years and as Milngavie have only lost the trophy 3 times in all that time, the pressure was really on ! The matches are always played in a very competitive but also friendly manner as befits a contest between local rivals. The difference this year was a resounding victory by the Ladies team and I hope we carry this form on for the rest of the season."

Husband and Wife Golfing Joke
Out on the golf course with his wife, the husband says, "Twenty years ago I had a brief affair. It meant nothing. I hope you can forgive me."
His wife was hurt but said, "Dearest, those days are long gone. What we have now is far more valuable. I forgive you." They embraced and kissed.
On the seventeenth tee, the husband was starting his back swing when the wife blurted out, "I'm sorry darling, I've been so conscience-stricken since you told me, but since we're being honest with each other, I have something to tell you also. Fifty-two years ago I had a sex change operation, I was a man before I met you. I hope you can forgive me."
The husband, froze at the top of his back swing, then threw a fit! He slammed the driver into the ground, kicked the ball into the woods, stormed off the tee, pushed the golf cart over on its side, broke the rest of his clubs one by one, then started on hers.
He screamed and ranted, "You liar! You cheat! You despicable deceiver! How could you? I trusted you with all my heart and soul... And all these years you've been playing off the ladies tees?!"
Thanks go to Jean Campbell (D&A Webmaster)for that one

Globespan holiday golf club booking disaster
Chris Kelly and the The Windyhill Belles, 8 "girls" from Windyhill Golf Club are flying out to Portugal on 30th April for 1 week. They booked their flights ages ago but have only now tried to book 4 Golf bags and clubs this weekend to be told that they are fully booked re golf equipment and we cannot get our clubs on holiday with us. Chris says - " We have been looking forward to this holiday for over a year now and have 3 rounds booked at various courses." "What do we do now? "
She is presently getting in touch with the Company who booked their golf and perhaps they could hire us some clubs, here's hoping. They will certainly be looking at other Airlines when arranging any more trips.

The 2007 Spring Meeting of the Garten Girls took place at Milngavie Golf Course today. Anna Telfer (Captain of Milngavie) hosted this 6 monthly event today. Helen Faulds, Janice Paterson, Noreen Fenton and Fiona Roger were in Team 1. Emma Wilson, Carol Fell and Anna Telfer were in Team 2. Be careful when flying with Globespan !
Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) and Carol Fell (Ranfurly Castle) went to Portugal for a golfing holiday on Sunday 18th March. They flew with Globespan who left their golf clubs in Glasgow because of overloading. This is happening more frequently ---- SO ALL GOLFERS BEWARE !!! --- 25 sets were left in Glasgow
Helen got her clubs 48 hours later on the Tuesday and the Fells got their clubs on Wednesday afternoon on their return from the golf --- 72 hours later.
On the Homeward journey to Glasgow today everyone on the flight had there golf clubs left at Faro !! --- Approx 50 sets of Clubs ---
So PLEASE BE AWARE of the problem and make sure you are covered in your travel insurance for the extra cost of hiring clubs etc
I THINK WE MUST LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT ALTHOUGH YOU PAY £30 TO BOOK YOUR CLUBS ON A FLIGHT (which we did in October 2006) ---
--- THIS IS WHAT GLOBESPAN SAY :May we refer you to our Terms and Conditions which clearly states:
'Sporting Equipment
Sporting equipment is carried on a limited release basis, i.e. entirely at
your own risk for loss, damage or delay.
IMPORTANT
Sporting equipment will be carried subject to load and as such we cannot guarantee space on the flight on which you are booked for such items. In the unlikely event that space is not available, the equipment will be sent on the next flight with available space.'
SO ALL GOLFERS BE AWARE
However, I strongly feel that perhaps we should let more people know of the problem so please email me at webmaster@rlcga.com and perhaps I can let the newspapers know of the problem

Joke of the Day
In 1923, Who Was:
1. President of the largest steel company?
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?
4. Greatest wheat speculator?
5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?
6. Great Bear of Wall Street?
These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their days.
Now, 80 years later, the history book asks us if we know what ultimately became of them.
The Answers:
1. The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.
3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.
5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.
6. The Great Bear of Wall Street,Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide.
However:in that same year,1923,the PGA Champion and the winner ofthe most important golf tournament,
the US Open was Gene Sarazen.
What became of him?
He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.
The Moral: Screw work --- Play golf.
Thanks go to Margaret Reid for that one(Webmaster of Lanarkshire County)

Junior Coaching at Erskine
Dean Robertson, the reigning Scottish PGA champion and Italian Open winner in 1999, took time out of his schedule this weekend to encourage a new generation of local golfers.
On Saturday, the Paisley 36 year old gave a clinic to a group of children who are being coached by Erskine Golf Club volunteer coaches, through the national junior golf strategy, clubgolf.
Encouragement from the European Tour player comes at a perfect time for the youngsters. Whilst other golfers in Scotland have hung up their clubs for the winter, the children are mid-way through a coaching course organised by the Club.
“This group of children had an Easter starter session, then a summer school, and now we are giving them a six week winter slot,” said Erskine Golf Club’s Junior Development Co-ordinator, Janette McCartney.
“We wanted to keep their enthusiasm going so we are very grateful that Dean could spare time this weekend. The children loved the experience and we hope that the word will spread and we will attract more juniors next year.”
Erskine has always had a strong junior section and a welcoming approach to its young players. Janette, together with fellow club members, has made an extra commitment to encourage local children to take up the sport by becoming the only club in Renfrewshire to offer clubgolf coaching.
Launched by Colin Montgomerie and First Minister, Jack McConnell in 2003, clubgolf aims to create the opportunity for every nine year old in Scotland to experience the game from 2009. Six Erskine GC members have since become qualified to coach the programme’s Level 1 course. This winter a further three will become trained to join them as volunteer coaches.
“We did have a big junior section before but we realised that they weren’t going to be around for ever unless we did something about it,” admits Janette
“After six of us became qualified to coach last year, we advertised in local papers, spread the word amongst our members, I approached the Active Schools Co-ordinator and got permission to send flyers around local schools.
“We attracted over 50 children, most of whom hadn’t played golf before. One of my main reasons for doing clubgolf was we had no girl players but now we have five as a result of this programme.”
In addition to creating this Christmas treat for the current children on the programme, the Club hopes that Dean Robertson’s clinic this weekend will generate further interest from other local children.
“The children on our programme have varying levels of ability but they are all enjoying it and improving,” said Janette. “Some of them are only just learning to hold the club whilst others are already at the stage where they are ready to move on to being coached by our local Pro, Peter Thomson, who can take them to the next stage.
“We start the coaching again at Easter time and now that we have a larger group of coaches, I’m hoping we will get a similar number of children from the local community signing up for the course.”
Dean Robertson said, “Erskine Golf Club is helping the development of golf in Scotland by giving these local children the opportunity to play golf at an early age in a fun environment.
“The volunteers are doing a fantastic job in teaching these children the fundamental skills. Golf programmes like this one will provide the required platform from which these kids can follow their dreams and aspire to one day play like their golfing heroes.”
NOTES FOR EDITORS:
- clubgolf is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland. The strategy has been developed as a direct result of the Scottish Executive's commitment to introduce every nine-year-old child in Scotland to the game by 2009.
- clubgolf is funded by the Scottish Executive which has committed £500,000 per year to the scheme through sportscotland until 2009.
- As Scotland's national junior golf strategy, clubgolf is backed by Scotland's most famous golfers, Paul Lawrie, Sandy Lyle, Catriona Matthew, Colin Montgomerie, and Scotland's First Minister, Jack McConnell, MSP and Sports Minister, Patricia Ferguson, MSP. It aims to provide new opportunities in the game for every child in the country and to increase participation in the sport by adopting a totally new approach to the development of junior golf.
- clubgolf has been introduced at a point where, of the 260,000 members in the 580 clubs north of the border, the average age is between 42 and 44 years old. This figure is likely to rise in line with the demographic trend of an ageing Scottish population. Although memberships have grown at a rate of just under five percent during the past decade, there has been an increase of almost 20 percent in the number of courses built over the same period.
- clubgolf aims to build on existing traditions and club infrastructures to develop a new and innovative approach that will introduce new participants to the game and secure the sport’s future.
- Clubs across Scotland are playing a vital role in the clubgolf strategy. Following clubgolf’s six-week firstclubgolf course, children have the opportunity to progress to the second phase of clubgolf's Player Pathway, Stage 1. Hosted by their local clubs, Stage 1 is a 23-hour course, covering the fundamentals of putting, chipping, full swing, rules and etiquette, taught by the club's fully trained volunteer coaches. After Stage 1 there are a further four stages on the Player Pathway.
clubgolf's targets for 2009 are:
- 50,000 9 year olds introduced to clubgolf every year through firstclubgolf
- 50,000 9-14 year olds retained in the clubgolf programme at any one time
- 20,000 9-14 year olds experiencing golf in a community golf programme setting
- 200 clubgolf centres (golf clubs and community linked centres delivering some of the above)
- 20 junior clubgolf facilities (new clubgolf facilities)
- 40 affiliated junior golf facilities (driving ranges/practice facilities utilising the clubgolf brand)
