GREENLEES STALWART WILLEEN MCCALLUM HAS DIED
Willeen McCallum |
It is with great saddness that I have to announce the death of Willeen McCallum who ran the Greenlees league, single handed for 19 years. Her organisational skills, friendly manner and sense of humour stood her in good stead and we all owed her a great debt of gratitude.
I don’t think anyone realised how much time and effort Willeen spent making sure that the league ran smoothly through the summers and then followed this up with the presentation lunches and December fixture meetings.
As well as the general day to day running of the league, proposals from clubs had to be dealt with as well as any complaints from clubs - on the whole the latter were not numerous."
"But it all added up to responsibility of running the league."
In her time of office the 50th anniversary took place and she organised a Greenlees Jamboree over Troon Portland. A highly successful day. 3 ball best ball competition with 60 competitors. Lunch provided for some 100 people. -- No mean feat of organisation
Willeen, Anne and Fiona 75th Anniversary Celebration at Cathcart Castle |
She then attended the 75th Anniversary Match at Cathcart Castle in 2015 she is seen in the photo with her successor Fiona Roger and Secretary at the time of the 75th Anniversary Anne Dunn
On her retrial in 2008 she said that the highlight of her 20 years in office was the meeting of Mrs Greenlees in 1990 at the 50th Anniversary at Troon. Mrs Greenlees got married at aged 17, had 2 children by the age of 20 and started her golfing career at Prestwick St.Nicholas and died in 1994 aged 94
Willeen on the other hand started her golfing career at Ranfurly Castle and on her retiral she just managesd to squeeze in at no 9 in the Whitecraigs Greenlees Team..

SOUTH WIN THE VETERANS JAMBOREE AT GLENBERVIE
Team Scotland - Photo courtesy of Midland vets |
This year Scotland hosted the annual Jamboree at Glenbervie GC near Falkirk for the Miller Stirling Trophy
The Jamboree is a prestigious 3 day event payed between the best "senior" lady golfers from England -- namely North, Midlands, South and Scotland.
Those who went to watch were treated to seeing some fantastic golf being played on a lovely course but with extremely difficult greens.
Throughout the week the teams played 3 foursomes matches in the morning followed by 6 singles matches in the afternoon - so 9 points available each day. At the end of day 2 the teams from the North and the South were vying for top spot - both teams having won their matches against Scotland and the Midlands.
However, on countback of matches the South were up by half a point overall meaning in the final days match between the two leading teams, the North needed to win the match in order to secure the winners trophy.
Scotland lost to North, South and Midlands over the 3 days - - Unfortunately the Vets Jamboree and the Senior Home Internationals coincided and Karen Ballantyne (Captain of the SVLGA) said "Very proud of SVLGA members Gillian Kyle, Elaine Moffat, Karen Marshall and Karen Ferguson-Snedden who couldn’t be at our Jamboree but performed so well at the Senior Home Internationals (Mixed).
Very well done to Captain Fiona de Vries.
A tense final day!
After the morning foursomes, the South led by 2 matches to 1, so the North then needed to secure wins in at least 4 of their 6 afternoon matches.
The end result came down to the last putt on the final green where the match was halved and resulted in the whole match being halved 4 1/2 to 4 1/2
The North missed out by the smallest of margins - they received the Tony Moffat Quaich as runners-up and the Miller Stirling Trophy this year went to the South.

SCOTLAND JUNIOR AND SENIOR HOME INTERNATIONAL COMBINED TEAMS NARROWLY MISS OUT TO ENGLAND TO CLAIM THE TITLES
Final Results Junior Home Internationals |
Scotland’s junior golfers narrowly lost to England in a tense deciding match in the mixed Junior Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.
The Scots needed to win the match to claim the trophy but came up tantalisingly short after losing a dramatic encounter 11-10.
Carmen Griffiths emerged with five points out of six with four wins and two halves to have the best girl performance
Final Results Seniors Home Internationals |
Scotland’s mixed Senior squad were also chasing outright victory on the final day at Woodhall Spa, but were narrowly edged out by their English rivals.
England secured the title with a narrow 6½ – 5½ win.
Karen Marshall was Scotland’s top performer in the match with 4½ points out of 6.
Ireland beat Wales by 7½ – 4½ in the other match on the course to finish third overall.
Final Results - Women's Home Internationals |
Scotland’s women’s team lost their opening matches to Ireland and England but bounced back in style by beating Wales 8½ -½ on the final day. That result was enough for the Scots to cement third place behind England and Ireland in the Women’s competition.
DAY 3 OF THE HOME INTERNATIONALS
Going into the final day of the Home Internationals, the combined teams for the Boys & Girls and Senior Men & Women are both going head to head with the Auld Enemy for victory in their respective competitions.

Mixed Success on Day 1 of the Home Internationals
The Scottish Junior and Senior teams both won the first of their round robin matches, but the Women’s team lost to Ireland and will now almost certainly have to beat defending champions England in the second round if they are to have any chance of repeating their most recent victory in the competition at Ballybunion in Northern Ireland in 2018.
This year due to Covid regulations both the boys and the girls, and the senior men and women, are playing together as one team and it proved to be a recipe for success for both combined squads.
Boys & Girls Day 1: Scotland 14.5 Wales 6.5
The combined Scottish boys’ and girls’ team raced into a commanding 5 ½ – 1 ½ lead over Wales at lunch after foursomes victories from Carmen Griffiths and Grace Crawford, Megan Docherty and Rachel Foster, Calum Scott and Gregor Graham , Daniel Bullen and Ross Laird and Cameron Adam and Connor Graham.
Ruben Lindsay and Scottish Boys Champion Archie Finnie halved their match, with the one loss registered when Robyn Fowlie and Katie Graham lost 5 & 4 to Darcey Harry and Gracie Mayo.
Fowlie quickly made amends for her earlier defeat when she beat Mayo 5 & 4 in the singles and further victories from Foster, Crawford, Lindsay, Scott, Adam, Laird and Connor Graham plus halves from Griffiths and Gregor Graham helped Scotland secure an impressive 14 ½ to 6 ½ win.
The Scots now play Ireland who lost 19-2 to England in the other first round contest.
Senior Men & Women Day 1: Scotland 7 Wales 5
The seniors match between Scotland and Wales was tied 2-2 after an evenly-balanced foursomes series in the morning.
The first two foursomes matches involving Karen Ferguson-Snedden and Gillian Kyle and Elaine Moffat and Karen Marshall were both halved. Paul Moultrie and Stewart Henderson secured Scotland’s first full point with a 4 & 3 victory over Nick Grimmitt and Adrian Bragg before Philip Sutton and Andrew Williams evened things up by beating Ronnie Clark and Derek Paton by the same margin.
At that stage the match appeared to be too close to call. Wales briefly took the lead when Ferguson-Snedden and Moffat lost the first two singles but Scotland turned things round when Kyle, Marshall, Moultrie and Paton all won and Henderson and Clark halved their matches.
Scotland’s 7-5 victory means they will now play Ireland who lost 8-4 to England on the opening day.
Women Day 1: Scotland 3.5 Ireland 5.5
The one disappointment on the opening day for Scotland came in the women’s match in which Scotland lost to Ireland after being level at lunch.
Hazel MacGarvie and Shannon McWilliam got the Scots off to the best possible start in the foursomes when they secured a 3 & 1 victory over Lauren Walsh and Sara Byrne. Chloe Goadby and Tara Mactaggart then halved their foursome against Aine Donegan and Anna Foster before Annabel Wilson and Beth Coulter evened things up with a one hole win over Hannah Darling (below) and Lorna McClymont.
It was all to play for in the singles and British champion Louise Duncan did put another point on the board for Scotland when she beat Foster 2 & 1 in the top singles, as did Curtis Cup hopeful Darling, but defeats for MacGarvie, McWilliam, Mactaggart and Goadby saw the contest end 5½ – 3½ in favour of the Irish.
Scotland now play England, who won all six singles while romping to an 8-1 victory over Wales.

SUSAN WOOD WINS DRUMPELLIERS LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE 19TH TIME !!
Carrick Completes Family Double - Scottish Men's Amateur championship
Photograph - Courtesy of Scottish Golf
Angus Carrick followed in his father’s footsteps when he beat Connor Wilson by two holes in the final of the 2021 Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship at Murcar Links in Aberdeen.
Father, David (Douglas Park) claimed the title at Southerness in 1985 and 36 years later son, Angus, emulated that feat to join an illustrious group of champions which also includes Ryder Cup players Colin Montgomerie, Stephen Gallacher and Eric Brown and current Scottish number one Robert MacIntyre.
With former Walker Cup player David watching on, 27-year-old Carrick won the second but soon found himself two down when Wilson won the fourth, sixth and seventh. Carrick pulled one hole back on the eighth but it was not until he claimed both the 13th and 14th that he edged in front again and not until a closing birdie on the 18th that his victory was finally secured.
“I’m absolutely speechless, it’s all been a blur,” said the new champion. “In fact, I’m still not sure what’s actually happened.
“I knew my game was good enough to compete and to win so I went out and gave it my all.
“It was a really tough game. We both hit some great shots and even after nine rounds of golf, or whatever it is, we were both playing very well. Yeah, there were a few tired swings in there, but not many. I think it was just the last six holes where I won it. I still can’t really remember what happened, but my caddie told me I had four birdies in the last six holes. So, I came back strong and ultimately that’s what won it for me.
“It’s great to emulate dad,” he added. “and great that we’ve now both got our names on the trophy. It’s nice, really nice, that we’ll always have that to share.”
One of the first people to congratulate the new champion was his father.
“I’m immensely proud of him”, Carrick Snr said. “He played great golf the last four rounds and thoroughly deserved to win. I’m delighted now to be known as Angus Carrick’s father, rather than Angus being my son. It’s a fantastic result.”

Vivien Howe has her 1st Hole in One at Ranfurly Castle
Vivien Howe
Much excitement today at the 7th hole at Ranfurly Castle when Vivien said (very casually) after hitting a nice 7 wood shot onto the green “I think that’s a Hole-In-One”.
She had heard it dropping although the rest of her playing partners had not been paying attention !!
Sure enough, the ball was in the hole.
Well done Vivien and congratulations on your 1st Hole-In-One !

CARMEN GRIFFITHS WINS THE U18 SCOTTISH MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Katie Graham - Runner up with Carmen Griffiths Photo Courtesy of Scottish Golf |
From the Scottish Golf Website
The 2019 European Junior Vagliano Trophy team member came into the championship in second place on the 2021 Scottish Girls’ Order of Merit and she showed why she is currently ranked only behind Curtis Cup hopeful, Hannah Darling, on that list with a series of impressive victories in her march to the final.
The new champion’s toughest match came in the second round when she was taken to the 18th hole by fellow Scottish international, Rachel Foster, from Prestwick St Nicholas but she then beat Parkstone’s Alice Webb 6 & 5 in the semi-finals before proving too strong for Graham in the afternoon.
Graham had previously knocked out top seed, Forfar’s Robyn Fowlie, in the second round and then beat Shrewsbury’s Isla McDonald-O’Brien 6 & 5 to earn her place in the final.
Griffiths went ahead as early as the second hole of the final and was three ahead after ten holes before Graham clawed one back on the 11th. Griffith increased her lead again with wins on the 12th and 14th and though Graham won the 15th that reprieve proved to be short-lived when Griffiths sealed victory on the very next hole.
Runner up Katie Dunn with Winner Lindsay Main Photo courtesy of Jean MacIntyre |
Lindsay Main claimed a popular victory on her home course in the concurrent Scottish Girls’ Net Amateur Championship.
The Strathaven player beat Elderslie’s Ava Graham 2 & 1 in the semi-finals and then collected the trophy following an emphatic 7 & 6 triumph over Paisley’s Katie Dunn in the final. She was pulled back to two up when Dunn won the seventh but then won five successive holes from the eighth to clinch the Aynsley Reid Salver.
Earlier Dunn had reached the final after securing a 7 & 5 victory over Lucie Barclay from Kilmacolm.

Katie Graham Seals Last Grasp Win Against Top Seed
Katie Graham from Hamilton Golf Club |
Katie Graham from Hamilton booked her place in the last four after beating top seed Robyn Fowlie in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Girls’ Amateur Championship at Strathaven.
Graham secured a convincing 4 & 3 victory over Royal Troon’s Freya Russell in the morning but then had to come from behind to claim a last gasp victory over Forfar’s Fowlie on the 19th hole.
Graham’s opponent in the last four is Isla McDonald-O’Brien from Shrewsbury who also had to go to the 19th hole in the morning before beating Hazlehead’s Rachel Mathieson and then defeated Ruby Watt from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre 4 & 2 in the last eight.
In the other semi-final Aboyne’s Carmen Griffiths will face Alice Webb who plays out of Parkstone in Dorset who won against Jennifer Lynagh from Caldwell Golf Club by 2&1
Griffiths had a straightforward 8 & 7 victory over Strathmore’s Kirsten Miller in the first round but then had a much tougher test against Rachel Foster from Prestwick St Nicholas after lunch.
Foster reached the quarter finals of the recent Scottish Women’s Amateur Championship at Gullane where she lost to eventual champion Chloe Goadby and against Griffiths she led all the way until her opponent drew level on the 15th and then went ahead for the first time in the match on the 18th hole.
The semi-finals of the concurrent net match play competition will see Elderslie’s Ava Graham face Strathaven member Lindsay Main and Paisley’s Katie Dunne goes up against Lucie Barclay from Kilmacolm.
